Song of the Day #5,901: ‘(You’re) Having My Baby’ – Paul Anka with Odia Coates

Throwing back to the week of August 31, 1974, we find Paul Anka atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘(You’re) Having My Baby,’ a song that spent three weeks at #1. It was Anka’s second and last chart-topper.

The treacly duet with singer Odia Coates has been widely derided in the years since its release, including being voted the worst song of all time in a 2006 CNN poll.

‘(You’re) Having My Baby’ wasn’t very well-received even by contemporary listeners. It was criticized as sexist, in part for referring to the child as “my baby” rather than “our baby” as well as for the general creepiness of the idea of a woman carrying a child to demonstrate how much she loves a man.

Anka even fits in an abortion reference, courting further controversy a year after Roe v. Wade had struck down anti-choice laws across the country.

In 1974, I guess, a sappy song with offensive lyrics was the ticket to a #1 hit.

[Paul:]
Having my baby
What a lovely way of saying
How much you love me

Having my baby
What a lovely way of saying
What you’re thinking of me

I can see it
Face is glowing
I can see it in your eyes
I’m happy you know it

[Paul & Odia:]
That you’re having my baby

[Paul:]
You’re the woman I love
And I love what it’s doing to ya

[Paul & Odia:]
Having my baby

[Paul:]
You’re a woman in love
And I love what’s going through ya

The need inside you
I see it showin’
Whoa, the seed inside ya

Baby, do you feel it growing
Are you happy you know it
That you’re

[Paul & Odia:]
Having my baby

[Odia:]
I’m a woman in love
And I love what it’s doing to me

[Paul & Odia:]
Having my baby

[Odia:]
I’m a woman in love
And I love what’s going through me

[Paul:]
Didn’t have to keep it
Wouldn’t put ya through it
You could have swept it from your life
But you wouldn’t do it
No, you wouldn’t do it

[Paul & Odia:]
And you’re having my baby

[Odia:]
I’m a woman in love
And I love what it’s doing to me

[Both:]
Having my baby

[Odia:]
I’m a woman in love
And I love what’s going through me

[Paul:]
Having my baby
(Having my baby)
What a lovely way of saying
How much you love me

[Paul:]
Having my baby
(having my baby)

[Odia:]
I’m a woman in love
And I love what’s going through me

I found this song schmaltzy and creepy when I was a kid, and it clearly has not worn well.

This is definitely a creepy sexist stupid song! And I thought put your head on my shoulder was dumb 🤷‍♀️
