Throwing back to the week of August 10, 1974, we find Roberta Flack atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Feel Like Makin’ Love.’
This soulful R&B classic gave Flack her third #1 hit in three consecutive years, following ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ in 1972 and ‘Killing Me Softly with His Song’ in 1973. What a trio! The first two won Record of the Year at the Grammys, making Flack the first artist to claim that award back-to-back.
That feat has since been accomplished by U2 and Billie Eilish.
‘Feel Like Makin’ Love’ was nominated for the same honor but Flack missed the trifecta when Olivia Newton-John took home the award for ‘I Honestly Love You.’ Also nominated that year were Joni Mitchell for ‘Help Me,’ Elton John for ‘Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,’ and Maria Muldaur for ‘Midnight at the Oasis.’
Am I alone in having never heard of that last one?
Strollin’ in the park
Watchin’ winter turn to spring
Walkin’ in the dark
Seein’ lovers do their thing
[Chorus]
Oo-oo-ooh
That’s the time
I feel like makin’ love to you
That’s the time
I feel like makin’ dreams come true
Oh, baby
[Verse 2]
When you talk to me
When you’re moanin’ sweet and low
When you’re touchin’ me
And my feelings start to show
[Chorus]
Oo-oo-ooh
That’s the time
I feel like makin’ love to you
That’s the time
I feel like makin’ dreams come true
Oh, baby
[Verse 3]
In a restaurant
Holdin’ hands by candlelight
While I’m touchin’ you
Wanting you with all my might
[Chorus]
Oo-oo-ooh
That’s the time
I feel like makin’ love to you
That’s the time
I feel like makin’ dreams come true
Oh, baby
Strollin’ in the park
Watchin’ winter turn to spring
Walkin’ in the dark
Seein’ lovers do their thing
[Chorus Outro]
Oo-oo-ooh
That’s the time
I feel like makin’ love to you
That’s the time
I feel like makin’ dreams come true
Oh, baby
I didn’t recognize the title or artist, but I have heard the song before.
Meanwhile, what a great year for music! I wonder if there is something about the “4s?” 64, 74 and 84 were all chalk full of classic songs.
I remember that song too. I adore Roberta Flack. I just read that she is 87 years old! Her voice is amazing.
Maybe you’re not alone, but how old were you in ’74? I was a freshman in college, and Midnight at the Oasis was a big hit on FM radio then. Maria Muldaur actually performed on our campus that year, and after ushering (a great campus job, BTW), I plonked myself down in the first row for the 2nd half of that show. When it was time for an encore, I shouted out “Don’t You Feel My Leg” (another song from that album). Maria looked me dead in the eye and just said, “Don’t worry, I won’t.” I think she may have used that one before….
Love Roberta Flack’s voice.
