Song of the Day #5,852: ‘Hernando’s Hideaway’ – Archie Bleyer

Throwing back to the week of July 10, 1954, we find Kitty Kallen still dominating the charts with ‘Little Things Mean a Lot,’ at #1 for the seventh of nine straight weeks.

In the #2 spot that week was Archie Bleyer’s recording of ‘Hernando’s Hideaway,’ a song from the musical The Pajama Game, written by Jerry Ross and Richard Adler. The song was recorded by several artists, but Bleyer’s was the most successful.

On stage and screen, ‘Hernando’s Hideaway’ was performed by Carol Haney. For your viewing pleasure, here’s her version in the 1957 film adaptation, directed by Stanley Donen and George Abbott.

[Verse 1]
I know a dark secluded place
A place where no one knows your face
A glass of wine, a fast embrace
It’s called Hernando’s Hideaway
Olé!

[Verse 2]
All you see are silhouettes
And all you hear are castanets
And no one cares how late it gets
Not at Hernando’s Hideaway
Olé!

[Bridge]
At the Golden Finger Bowl or anyplace you go
You will meet your Uncle Max and everyone you know
But if you go to the spot that I am thinkin’ of
You will be free to gaze at me and talk of love

[Verse 3]
Just knock three times and whisper low
That you and I were sent by Joe
Then strike a match and you will know
You’re in Hernando’s Hideaway
Olé!

[Instrumental Break]

[Verse 3]
Just knock three times and whisper low
That you and I were sent by Joe
Then strike a match and you will know
You’re in Hernando’s Hideaway

I know the song, but have never seen the show or movie from which it came. I’ll have to remedy that since I’m such a big fan of THE Stanley Donen and George Abbott.🤪

  2. Peg says:

l remember this song. Doris Day starred in the movie version of Pajama Game
