Throwing back to the week of June 11, 1994, we find All-4-One atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘I Swear.’ As I noted a few weeks ago, this song spent 11 straight weeks at #1, making it one of the longest-running chart-toppers in history.
Holding the #2 spot is Madonna with the ballad ‘I’ll Remember,’ a soundtrack cut from the forgettable film With Honors (do you remember a movie about a Harvard student played by Brendan Fraser befriending a homeless man played by Joe Pesci? Neither do I.).
When I did my Madonna deep dive a few years ago, I decided to focus on her studio albums and spent little time discussing her soundtrack efforts. The truth is, I could have spent a couple of weeks on her movie work alone.
In addition to songs from movies she starred in (Dick Tracy, Desperately Seeking Susan, Who’s That Girl?, A League of Their Own, Evita, etc.), Madonna has contributed some great tracks to other films. Think ‘Crazy For You’ from Vision Quest or the Grammy-winning ‘Beautiful Stranger’ from Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.
‘I’ll Remember’ came at a good time for Madonna, on the heels of her poorly-received Erotica album and Sex book. This stately ballad was a nice change of pace and image, leading into her comeback album Bedtime Stories later that year.
Say good-bye
To not knowing when
The truth in my whole life began
Say good-bye
To not knowing how to cry
You taught me that
[Chorus]
And I’ll remember
The strength that you gave me
Now that I’m standing on my own
I’ll remember
The way that you saved me
I’ll remember
[Verse 2]
Inside
I was a child
That could not mend a broken wing
Outside
I looked for a way
To teach my heart to sing
[Chorus]
And I’ll remember
The love that you gave me
Now that I’m standing on my own
I’ll remember
The way that you changed me
I’ll remember
[Verse 3]
I learned
To let go
Of the illusion that we can possess
I learned
To let go
I travel in stillness
[Bridge]
And I’ll remember happiness
I’ll remember (I’ll remember)
Mmm… (I’ll remember)
Mmm…
[Chorus]
And I’ll remember
The love that you gave me
Now that I’m standing on my own
I’ll remember
The way that you changed me
I’ll remember
[Outro]
No, I’ve never been afraid to cry
Now I finally have a reason why
I’ll remember (I’ll remember)
No, I’ve never been afraid to cry
Now I finally have a reason why
I’ll remember (I’ll remember)
No, I’ve never been afraid to cry
Now I finally have a reason why
I’ll remember (I’ll remember)
I vaguely remember this song about as well as I remember the movie, which I’m pretty sure we saw.
I don’t remember the movie either. She really has been in several good movies hasn’t she!
