Song of the Day #5,801: ‘Champagne Supernova’ – Oasis

Continuing a countdown of my favorite albums of 1995…

#7 – What’s the Story (Morning Glory)? – Oasis

The sophomore release by British indie rockers Oasis is a Britpop touchstone and one of history’s best-selling albums worldwide. For a brief period, Oasis was the biggest thing in the UK since The Beatles (though brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher were a much pricklier duo than Lennon and McCartney).

The album is best known for ‘Wonderwall,’ now considered one of the all-time greats. Surprisingly, that song was the fourth single. ‘Champagne Supernova,’ another classic, was the sixth. Maybe the band didn’t know how to gauge the potential of their own material, but that also speaks to how strong Morning Glory is from start to finish.

Several of these songs include snippets of earlier hits (often by The Beatles) before segueing into their own groove, a cheeky nod to legacy and influence by a band that was becoming quite influential in their own right.

Oasis followed What’s the Story (Morning Glory)? with five more multi-platinum releases before abruptly breaking up in 2008, but I wasn’t onboard for any of them. For whatever reason, my appreciation for the band started and stopped with this classic album.

[Verse 1]
How many special people change?
How many lives are living strange?
Where were you while we were gettin’ high?
Slowly walking down the hall
Faster than a cannonball
Where were you while we were gettin’ high?

[Chorus]
Someday you will find me caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova in the sky
Someday you will find me caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova, a champagne supernova in the sky

[Verse 2]
Wake up the dawn and ask her why
A dreamer dreams she never dies
Wipe that tear away now from your eye
Slowly walking down the hall
Faster than a cannonball
Where were you while we were gettin’ high?

[Chorus]
Someday you will find me caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova in the sky
Someday you will find me caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova, a champagne supernova

[Post-Chorus]
‘Cause people believe
That they’re gonna get away for the summer
But you and I, we live and die
The world’s still spinnin’ ’round, we don’t know why
Why? Why? Why? Why?

[Guitar Solo]

[Verse 3]
How many special people change?
How many lives are livin’ strange?
Where were you while we were gettin’ high?
Slowly walking down the hall
Faster than a cannonball
Where were you while we were gettin’ high?

[Chorus]
Someday you will find me caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova in the sky
Someday you will find me caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova, a champagne supernova

[Post-Chorus]
‘Cause people believe
That they’re gonna get away for the summer
But you and I, we live and die
The world’s still spinnin’ ’round, we don’t know why
Why? Why? Why? Why?

[Guitar Solo]

[Outro]
How many special people change?
How many lives are living strange?
Where were you while we were getting high?
We were gettin’ high
We were gettin’ high
We were getting high
We were gettin’ high
We were gettin’ high
We were getting high
We were getting high
We were gettin’ high
We were gettin’ high

Beyond “Wonderwall” I’m not sure I know much else from this album or Oasis in general. Given your high praise for this album, I suppose I should give it a spin.

  2. Oh, the nostalgia. One of my favorite songs in my teenage years. Still gives me chills when I listen to it nowadays. And the album is just perfect, not a single bad song.

I just perused a list of all the albums (and singles) released in 1995 and confirmed what I’ve been assuming… I was seriously out of touch with the music industry back then.

With one giant exception, an album I’m confident will have a high spot on your own list, so I’ll wait to discuss it then, there are only a handful of others I recall, though I doubt we owned. I’m interested to continue to read and listen to see if I feel I missed anything. ;p

    Love, love, this song….
