Continuing a countdown of my favorite albums of 1995…
#9 – Secret Heart – Ron Sexsmith
I didn’t discover Ron Sexsmith in 1995 — that happened six years later with the release of 2001’s Blue Boy. But my love of that album sent me back to his earlier catalog.
This self-titled record was not Sexsmith’s debut, but it was his first on a major label. According to the artist, this disc was relegated to the bargain bin before Elvis Costello started singing his praises.
It’s not until Sexsmith’s next album, 1997’s Other Songs, that I really start falling for his work. This one is a bit shaggy, and the songwriting not quite as sharp as what’s to come.
But it does feature a handful of special songs, including today’s SOTD, and serves as a nice introduction to a talented artist.
What are you so afraid of?
Could it be three simple words
Or the fear of being overheard?
What’s wrong?
Let her in on your secret heart
Secret heart, why so mysterious?
Why so secret, why so serious?
Maybe you’re just acting tough
Maybe you’re just not man enough
What’s wrong?
Let her in on your secret heart
The very secret you’re trying to conceal
Is the very same one you’re dying to reveal
Go tell her how you feel
Secret heart, come out and share it
This loneliness, few can bear it
Could it have something to do with
Admitting that you just can’t go through it alone?
Let her in on your secret heart
It must be nice, it must be nice, to have Elvis Costello on your side.🤪
