Song of the Day #5,770: ‘II Most Wanted’ – Beyoncé & Miley Cyrus

Continuing my countdown of the songs on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter

The next two songs on my Cowboy Carter countdown are interesting examples of Beyoncé stirring the pot of pop culture discourse. As she once sang in ‘Formation,’ “you know you that bitch when you ’cause all this conversation.”

As duet partners on this album, Beyoncé chose Post Malone and Miley Cyrus, two white artists who have been criticized in the past for appropriating Black culture, and who have since migrated toward “whiter” genres.

This could be a coincidence — Cyrus and Malone are both talented and popular performers worthy of the spotlight — but it feels more like a subversive move tied to the reception Beyoncé received when dabbling in the country sphere several years ago.

Whatever her intent, I’m glad she did it, because these are two of my favorite songs on this album.

#7. ‘Levii’s Jeans’

This playful, sexy tune is the album’s most laid-back and sensual moment, and both Beyoncé and Post Malone deliver delightful vocal performances. Levi’s stock rose 20% the day after the album’s release (true story).

#6. ‘II Most Wanted’

Any song that starts off with an interpolation of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Landslide’ is bound to be good. Miley Cyrus has one of the great pop/rock voices and it blends beautifully with Beyoncé’s here on a lovely track that feels like 1970s Laurel Canyon.

#5. ’16 Carriages’

This song was released as a co-lead single with ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’ and I kind of let it pass me by at the time. In the full context of the album, it truly shines. This is one of the best-produced tracks on Cowboy Carter, balancing quiet vocal moments with spirited acoustic guitars and epic percussion.

[Verse 1]
Know we’re jumping the gun, but we’re both still young
One day, we won’t be
Didn’t know what I want ’til I saw your face
Say goodbye to the old me

[Pre-Chorus]
Came out of nowhere, didn’t give no warnin’
Pedal so heavy like the two most wanted
And I don’t know what you’re doin’ tonight
But I

[Chorus]
I’ll be your shotgun rider
‘Til the day I die
Smoke out the window flyin’
Down the 405
I’ll be your backseat baby, drivin’ you crazy
Anytime you like
Woah, I’ll be your shotgun rider
‘Til the day I, ’til the day I die

[Verse 2]
Making waves in the wind with my empty hand
My other hand on you
Been a while since I haven’t tried to pull away
But it’s time for something new

[Pre-Chorus]
Came out of nowhere, didn’t give no warnin’
Pedal so heavy like the two most wanted
And I don’t know what you’re doin’ tonight
But I

[Chorus]
I’ll be your shotgun rider
‘Til the day I die
Smoke out the window flyin’
Down the 405
Yeah, I’ll be your backseat baby, drivin’ you crazy
Anytime you like, woah
I’ll be your shotgun rider
‘Til the day I, ’til the day I die

[Post-Chorus]
(‘Til the day I, ’til the day I, ’til the day I die)
‘Til the day I die
(‘Til the day I, ’til the day I, ’til the day I die)

[Bridge]
I know we’re jumpin’ the gun and we’re both still young
But one day, we won’t be
I’ll go wherever you take me, seems kinda crazy
Ooh, oh
[Chorus: Beyoncé & Miley Cyrus]
I’ll be your shotgun rider
‘Til the day I die
We’re gettin’ high ’til we don’t realize
Time is passin’ by
Yeah, I’ll be your backseat baby, I’m drivin’ you crazy
Anytime you like, oh, oh
I’ll be your shotgun rider
‘Til the day I, ’til the day I die

[Post-Chorus]
(‘Til the day I, ’til the day I, ’til the day I die)
‘Til the day I die
(‘Til the day I, ’til the day I, ’til the day I die)
Mm, oh

Criticism of artists “appropriating” culture is exactly the type of wokeness that gives liberals a bad name and costs elections. If Beyoncé’s goal was to push back on such nonsense, I applaud her!

    I applaud her too 👏👏👏

now this is an elite trio right here!!

II Most Wanted is probably my favorite song of the album, I almost always play it through with a LevIIs Jeans follow up. That 1970s Laurel Canyon description is dead on, and this one does kind of hit different driving around California.

I also fully agree on 16 Carriages, it’s another top fave for me and I realized it was special on first listen, but only truly absorbed it within album context.

I’d likely have this song in my top 3 but no quibbles here. Miley’s voice floors me, and the combo with Beyoncé… next level.

And what a moment Post Malone is having. When you’ve got Beyoncé on one line and Taylor on the other, you know you’ve done a whole lot right.
