Song of the Day #5,736: ‘Older’ – Lizzy McAlpine

My knowledge of Lizzy McAlpine begins and ends with the song ‘Ceilings,’ which my daughters love. I would have predicted that she was around 20 years old and working on her first album.

Turns out I’m not far off on the age. McAlpine is 24. But the Philly-based singer-songwriter already has two full-length albums under her belt and a third on the way next month. So I guess I better get on board before I’m too far behind.

‘Older’ is the first single and title track from the new album. It’s a delicate piano ballad in the vein of Phoebe Bridgers. Apparently the lyrics touch on the 2020 death of her father, a topic she has explored on her previous albums.

As a fan of melancholy music, this could be right up my alley. I’ll make a point to listen to McAlpine’s first two records before this one comes out. It’s always good to have homework.

[Verse 1]
Over and over, a carousel ride
Pay for your ticket, watch the red moon climb
Sick to my stomach, can’t find the ground
Stuck in a loop, watch the curtain come down

[Chorus]
Thought it’d be over by now
Thought you would leave
Thought I would come to my senses
Wish I was stronger somehow
Wish it was easy
Somewhere I lost all my senses
I wish I knew what the end is

[Verse 2]
Over and over, watch it all pass
Mom’s getting older, I’m wanting it back
Where no one is dying, and no one is hurt
And I have been good to you instead of making it worse

[Chorus]
Thought it’d be over by now
Thought you would leave
Thought I would come to my senses
Wish I was stronger somehow
Wish it was easy
Somewhere I lost all my senses
I wish I knew what the end is

[Outro]
I wish I knew what the end is

Love Lizzy and frequent commenter Dana Gallup has heard one of her albums (Five Seconds Flat) in its entirety when I chose it for our album sharing road trip rotation. She’s so talented and makes some really beautiful music – I think “all my ghosts” remains a stand out fave.

    Hope you enjoy the dive!

Nice to see your daughters have inherited your discriminating good taste in music.
