Song of the Day #5,735: ‘Don’t Forget Me’ – Maggie Rogers

I first learned about Maggie Rogers from my daughter Fiona, who loved the song ‘Dog Years’ back in the late 2010s.

I then watched the viral video of Pharrell Williams listening to her song ‘Alaska’ during an NYU class in 2016. It’s hard not to both appreciate her talent and root for her success after watching that gem.

Somehow, though, I’ve never taken the time to dig deeper into her music. She has released two studio albums and several EPs since 2017, plus two independently produced albums before that, but I haven’t listened to any of them.

I plan to remedy that on April 12, when Rogers releases her third studio album, Don’t Forget Me. This seems as good a time as any to jump on the bandwagon.

I really like the lead single, which has a 70s folk rock sound that suits her well. This is a little less adventurous than some of her other tracks, but I dig that about it.

[Verse 1]
My friend Sally’s getting married
And to me that sounds so scary
I’m still tryin’ to clean up my side of the street
I can’t imagine what would happen
‘Cause I’m still acting out of habit
Hoping dirty words just don’t escape my teeth

[Pre-Chorus]
Oh, but every time I try just a little
Promise that I’ll meet in the middle
Always find my way back to my feet

[Chorus]
So close the door and change the channel
Give me something I can handle
A good lover or someone that’s nice to me
Take my money, wreck my Sundays
Love me ’til your next somebody
Oh, but promise me that whеn it’s time to leave
Don’t forgеt me
Don’t forget me

[Verse 2]
My friend Molly’s got a guy, she
Swears to God could be her family
Says he’s got the greenest eyes you’ve ever seen
But it’s crazy all the days she spends
Just following him to parties
She seems happy, oh, but that’s not love to me

[Pre-Chorus]
Oh, but every time I try just a little
Promise that I’ll meet in the middle
I always find my way back to my feet

[Chorus]
So close the door and change the channel
Give me something I can handle
A good lover or someone who’s nice to me
Take my money, wreck my Sundays
Love me ’til your next somebody
Oh, and promise me that when it’s time to leave
Don’t forget me
Don’t forget me

[Bridge]
And maybe I’m dead wrong
Maybe I was bitter from the winter all along
Maybe there’s a stranger standing, holding out for love
Just waiting on the next street
Just for me
Oh, just for me

[Chorus]
So close the door and change the channel
Give me something I can handle
A good lover, someone who’s nice to me
Take my money, wreck my Sundays
Love me ’til your next somebody
Oh, but promise me that when it’s time to leave
Oh, won’t you promise me that when it’s time to leave
Don’t forget me
Don’t forget me
