Kacey Musgraves won an Album of the Year Grammy for 2018’s Golden Hour, a wonderful blend of moody pop and her gentle country sound. It was her third strong release in six years (not including a Christmas album), and at the time it looked like she was on her way to superstardom.
Her 2017 marriage to singer Ruston Kelly ended in divorce in 2020, prompting a break-up album that promised to be a real beauty. Instead, 2021’s Star-Crossed was a muddled misfire, an artsy album that shared none of the DNA that made her earlier work so compelling.
Three years later, Musgraves is poised for a comeback. ‘Deeper Well,’ the lead single (and title track) of her upcoming album, is very much in the vein of her best albums, Same Trailer Different Park and Golden Hour. And lyrically, it acknowledges that she has gotten back to a better place emotionally as well as creatively.
It also finds her ditching her weed habit, once one of her favorite pastimes and lyrical inspirations. This might be the first song to ever mention a gravity bong.
Deeper Well comes out this Friday. Stay tuned for more thoughts on what I hope will be a strong return to form.
My Saturn has returned
When I turned twenty-seven
Everything started to change
[Verse 2]
Took a long time, but I learned
There’s two kinds of people, one is a giver
And one’s always tryin’ to take
All they can take
[Chorus]
So I’m sayin’ goodbye to the people
That I feel are real good at wastin’ my time
No regrets, baby, I just think that maybe
You go your way and I’ll go mine
It’s been a real good time
But you got dark energy, somethin’ I can’t unsee
And I’ve got to take care of myself
I found a deeper well
[Verse 3]
I used to wake and bake
Roll out of bed, hit the gravity bong that I made
And start the day
For a while, it got me by
Everything I did seemed better when I was high
I don’t know why
[Chorus]
So I’m gettin’ rid of the habits that I feel
Are real good at wastin’ my time
No regrets, baby, I just think that maybe
It’s natural when things lose their shine
So other things can glow
I’ve gotten older now, I know
How to take care of myself
I found a deeper well
Mm
[Verse 4]
When I was growing up
We had what we needed, shoes on our feet
But the world was as flat as a plate
And that’s okay
[Chorus]
The things I was taught only took me so far
Had to figure the rest out myself
And then I found
I found a deeper well
Mm
Mm
I really like this song, which she recently performed beautifully on SNL. The other song she did on SNL was also very good, so I expect this will be an excellent comeback album.
As a Star-Crossed fan, I’m always impressed with Kacey. Excited to hear the rest of this album, loving the guitar on the singles released so far 🙂
