Song of the Day #5,706: ‘Jump’ – Van Halen

Throwing back to the week of February 18, 1984, we find Culture Club atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Karma Chameleon.’

At #2, and on its way to a five-week stint at #1, was Van Halen’s ‘Jump.’ This was the rock band’s only #1 single, and the only top ten single of the David Lee Roth era. The Sammy Hagar incarnation would reach the top five twice over the next several years.

This song, ‘Panama,’ and ‘Hot For Teacher’ are the three Van Halen songs I remember best from my childhood, and this one was certainly the most ubiquitous.

Driven by a synth riff rather than their usual guitar sound, ‘Jump’ was a stylistic departure that was initially rejected by band members when Eddie Van Halen introduced it. They eventually came around.

Roth wrote a lyric inspired by a news account he saw of a suicide jumper. “Go ahead and jump” hits a little different in that context, though he did end up reshaping the song into more of a motivational anthem.

[Verse 1]
I get up, and nothing gets me down
You got it tough, I’ve seen the toughest around
And I know, baby, just how you feel
You got to roll with the punches to get to what’s real

[Pre-Chorus]
Oh, can’t you see me standing here?
I got my back against the record machine
I ain’t the worst that you’ve seen
Oh, can’t you see what I mean?

[Chorus]
Ah, might as well jump (Jump!)
Might as well jump
Go ahead and jump (Jump!)
Go ahead and jump

[Verse 2]
Hello! Hey, you! Who said that?
Baby, how you been?
You say you don’t know
You won’t know until you begin

[Pre-Chorus]
So can’t you see me standing here?
I’ve got my back against the record machine
I ain’t the worst that you’ve seen
Oh, can’t you see what I mean?

[Chorus]
Ah, might as well jump (Jump!)
Go ahead and jump
Might as well jump (Jump!)
Go ahead and jump

[Post-Chorus]
Jump!

[Guitar Solo]

[Keyboard Solo]

[Chorus]
Might as well jump (Jump!)
Go ahead and jump
Get it and jump (Jump!)
Go ahead and jump

[Outro]
Jump
Jump
Jump
Jump

Not sure we would have been so joyously dancing to this song during 80s night on the cruise ship if we’d realized the origin of the chorus!

  2. Dana Gallup says:

Such a fun song, as are most of the tracks on this album.
