Billboard’s #11 song of 2023 belongs to Sam Smith and Kim Petras, whose ‘Unholy’ broke a lot of ground for non-binary and transgender performers.
The catchy dance-pop track marked a departure for Smith, known primarily for their slow, sad ballads. Petras is a Los Angeles-based German singer-songwriter who was two years into her first record contract when she delivered this hit and went from relative anonymity to a chart-topping, award-winning artist.
‘Unholy’ reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in late 2022, becoming the first song by an openly non-binary or openly transgender artist to do so. It later won a Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, making Petras the first transgender performer to win a major Grammy award.

Here’s another one I know mostly through Orange Theory, although, coincidentally, I started singing this earlier this week in front of Daniel and he had quite the negative reaction, telling me that he really disliked the song. Can’t say I disagree with him. Sam Smith continues to be annoying in any musical style and gender.
