The Cure’s sixth studio album, 1985’s The Head on the Door, saw the band introducing a new pop sensibility to the mopey goth rock of earlier releases.
Sparked by successful lead-off single ‘In Between Days,’ the album gave the English band its first foothold in the U.S. and led to a run of platinum-selling albums in the late 80s and early 90s.
I’ve always appreciated The Cure through their singles without really taking to any of the albums I’ve sampled. I think that’s because the other Cure albums I’ve heard have been through the Decades series, covering their gloomier early 80s output.
This one is a different story. It’s breezy and eclectic, with lots of great hooks and an off-kilter sensibility that really works for me. This is an album that would have made me a Cure fan in 1985.
Yesterday I got so old
I felt like I could die
Yesterday I got so old
It made me want to cry
[Pre-Chorus 1]
Go on, go on, just walk away
Go on, go on, your choice is made
Go on, go on, and disappear
Go on, go on away from here
[Chorus]
And I know I was wrong when I said it was true
That it couldn’t be me and be her in between
Without you
Without you
[Verse 2]
Yesterday I got so scared
I shivered like a child
Yesterday, away from you
It froze me deep inside
[Pre-Chorus 2]
Come back, come back, don’t walk away
Come back, come back, come back today
Come back, come back, why can’t you see?
Come back, come back, come back to me
[Chorus]
And I know I was wrong when I said it was true
That it couldn’t be me and be her in between without you
Without you
Without you, without you
[Outro]
Without you, without you
Without you, without you
I definitely missed the boat on the Cure, though I do know and kinda like this song.
This one is the definition of a “perfect pop song”. Love it.
