Song of the Day #5,609: ‘Head Over Heels’ – Tears for Fears

I’m a little more than halfway through my Decades series, in which I’m covering albums released in each of the 40 years between 1970 and 2009. I’ve covered the first four years of every decade from the 70s through the 00s, plus — most recently — 1975.

That brings me to 1985, the year I turned 13. That’s a formative year in anybody’s life, musically and otherwise, so I’m excited to dive in once again to one of my favorite musical decades.

As always, I will start by counting down my own favorite albums from the year, before featuring critically and/or commercially successful albums with which I am less familiar.

I hadn’t yet become an “album guy” at age 13, so most of my contemporaneous music taste came in the form of radio singles. Therefore my top ten 1985 albums are all records I discovered later in life. Starting with…

#10 – Songs from the Big Chair – Tears for Fears

This one is a bit of a cheat, because I haven’t spent much time with the album as a whole. But any record that boasts the singles ‘Shout,’ ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World,’ and ‘Head Over Heels’ has to get a mention here.

I’m less familiar with the album’s other tracks — ‘The Working Hour,’ ‘Mothers Talk,’ ‘I Believe,’ ‘Broken,’ and ‘Listen’ — but a quick listen reveals they are all of a piece with the more celebrated tracks, if less immediately engaging.

On Songs from the Big Chair, English duo Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith serve up a heady blend of progressive rock and New Wave, crafting melodies as catchy as the soundscapes are enveloping. This is art pop at its finest.

[Verse 1]
I wanted to be with you alone
And talk about the weather
But traditions I can trace against the child in your face
Won’t escape my attention
You keep your distance with a system of touch
And gentle persuasion
I’m lost in admiration, could I need you this much?
Oh, you’re wasting my time
You’re just, just, just wasting time

[Chorus]
Something happens and I’m head over heels
I never find out till I’m head over heels
Something happens and I’m head over heels
Ah, don’t take my heart, don’t break my heart
Don’t, don’t, don’t throw it away

[Post-Chorus]
Throw it away
Throw it away

[Verse 2]
I made a fire and watching it burn
I thought of your future
With one foot in the past, now just how long will it last?
No, no, no, have you no ambition?
My mother and my brother’s used to breathing clean air
Nothing ever changes when you’re acting your age
And dreaming I’m a doctor
Nothing gets done when you feel like a baby
It’s hard to be a man when there’s a gun in your hand
Nothing ever changes when you’re acting your age
Oh, I feel so

[Chorus]
Something happens and I’m head over heels
I never find out till I’m head over heels
Something happens and I’m head over heels
Ah, don’t take my heart, don’t break my heart
Don’t, don’t, don’t throw it away

[Bridge]
And this is my four-leaf clover
I’m on the line, one open mind
This is my four-leaf clover

Ooh, looking forward to this installment of the decades series! 1985 was the year I graduated from high school and was probably one of my most “tuned in” times to the music scene. Case in point is this album, which I owned and listened to many times back in the day. Good stuff!

  2. After 38 years, this song continues to be a huge success here in Brazil. It plays a lot on the radio.

Always happy to revisit the music of the 80s. Great first pick!
