We have a first for Throwback Weekends — a week where almost the entire Hot 100 Top Ten has already been featured on the blog.
Here were the songs at #1 through #9 the week of September 28, 2013: Miley Cyrus’ ‘Wrecking Ball,’ Katy Perry’s ‘Roar,’ Lorde’s ‘Royals,’ Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines,’ Avicii’s ‘Wake Me Up!,’ Jay Z’s ‘Holy Grail,’ Lady Gaga’s ‘Applause,’ Eminem’s ‘Berzerk,’ and Drake’s ‘Hold On, We’re Going Home.’ Whew!
A couple of notes about that lineup. First, nice showing by the women, owning the top three spots after a summer dominated by Robin Thicke’s chauvinistic anthem.
And second, three of those songs were featured on the blog as part of a two-week guest blogging stint by daily commenter Dana. Dana included ‘Wrecking Ball,’ ‘Blurred Lines’ and ‘Wake Me Up!’ in his top ten songs of 2013. He must have been in heaven the last week of September.
That brings us to today’s actual Throwback Weekend selection, a remix of Lana Del Rey’s ‘Summertime Sadness’ by French DJ Cedric Gervais. This sped-up, danced-up version of the elegant original became an unexpected radio hit and eventually made it to #6, giving Del Rey her highest chart position to date.
I generally have no use for remixes, but I’ll admit to bopping along to this one while writing this blog post. And if it introduced more listeners to Lana Del Rey, I can’t complain.
I got my red dress on tonight
Dancin’ in the dark in the pale moonlight
Done my hair up real big, beauty queen style
High heels off, I’m feelin’ alive
[Pre-Chorus]
Oh my God, I feel it in the air
Telephone wires above
Are sizzlin’ like a snare
Honey I’m on fire, I feel it everywhere
Nothin’ scares me anymore
[Chorus]
Kiss me hard before you go
Summertime sadness
I just wanted you to know
That baby, you the best
[Post-Chorus]
I got that summertime, summertime sadness
Su-su-summertime, summertime sadness
Got that summertime, summertime sadness
Oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
[Drop]
I got that summertime
I got that summertime
I got that summertime
I got that summertime, summertime sadness
I got that summertime
I got that summertime
I got that summertime, summertime sadness
[Verse 2]
I’m feelin’ electric tonight
Cruisin’ down the coast, goin’ about 99
Got my bad baby by my heavenly side
I know if I go, I’ll die happy tonight
[Pre-Chorus]
Oh my God, I feel it in the air
Telephone wires above
Are sizzlin’ like a snare
Honey I’m on fire, I feel it everywhere
Nothin’ scares me anymore
[Chorus]
Kiss me hard before you go
Summertime sadness
I just wanted you to know
That baby, you the best
[Post-Chorus]
I got that summertime, summertime sadness
Su-su-summertime, summertime sadness
Got that summertime, summertime sadness
Oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
[Drop]
I got that summertime
I got that summertime, summertime sadness
Su-su-summertime, summertime sadness
Got that summertime, summertime sadness
Oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
Got that summertime
I got that summertime, summertime sadness
Su-su-summertime, summertime sadness
Got that summertime, summertime sadness
Oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
It’s rather scary that I have no memory of guest blogging for two weeks 10 years ago, but given that I often can’t remember a movie I saw a month ago, let alone years ago (see my Framed scores most days as Exhibit A), I guess this shouldn’t be all that surprising.
I know the feeling Dana 😊
