Sinéad O’Connor’s 10th and final album was released in 2014 with the great title I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss. The title was a nod to the Ban Bossy campaign, which launched the same year and aimed to remove negative associations with women in positions of power.
This album picks up where its predecessor left off, serving up another batch of solid, confessional songs that make great use of O’Connor’s vocals. Musically, the tracks have a muscularity that at times hearkens back to her debut.
O’Connor’s lyrics are more personal than political on this record, diving into both good and bad relationships. The song ‘The Voice of My Doctor’ is a scathing account of an affair she had with a man who turned out to be married. ‘The Vishnu Room’ is an unabashed love song written, presumably, for the Hindu god.
The album’s most touching song is ‘8 Good Reasons,’ today’s SOTD. It describes times she has contemplated suicide, only to reconsider because of her children’s eyes (the titular eight reasons).
No cause of death has been given for O’Connor at this time, but given her history of mental illness and previous suicide attempts, it is widely believed she took her own life. The fact that one of her sons committed suicide early last year, robbing of her of two of those eight eyes, must have made things unbearable for her.
The world is a lesser place without O’Connor’s unique talent and perspective, and I’m sorry it took her passing away for me to discover these albums I missed. I hope she ultimately found the peace and comfort somewhere that eluded her in this world.
Don’t know if I should quite sing this song
Don’t know if it maybe might be wrong
But then again it maybe might be right
To tell you ’bout the bullet and the red light
[Verse 2]
You know I’m not from this place
I’m from a different time, different space
And it’s real uncomfortable
To be stuck somewhere you just don’t belong
[Chorus]
But I got eight good reasons to stick around
Eight good reasons, well maybe nine now
[Verse 3]
I had a dream one night
About a bullet and a red light
You know it felt alright
You know it actually felt quite nice
[Spoken Interlude]
If I could have gone
Without it hurting anyone
Like a child, I would have found me mum
Like a bird I would have been flown
[Verse 4]
You know I don’t much like life
I don’t mind admitting that it ain’t right
You know I love to make music
But my head got wrecked by the business
[Verse 5]
Everybody wanting something from me
They rarely ever wanna just know me
I became the stranger no one sees
Cut glass I’ve crawled upon my knees
[Chorus]
But I got eight good reasons to stick around
Eight good reasons, well maybe nine now
[Verse 3]
I had a dream one night
About a bullet and a red light
You know it felt alright
You know it actually felt quite nice
[Chorus]
But I got eight good reasons to stick around
Eight good reasons, well maybe nine now
Eight good reasons to stick around
Eight good reasons, well maybe nine now
Well maybe nine now
I’m sure the loss of her son was excruciating, but she still had six good reasons to stick around, not to mention all those around the world who loved her music.
