Song of the Day #5,478: ‘If You Insist’ – Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit

I’ve heard Jason Isbell’s new album, Weathervanes, all the way through just once but I already know it’s a work of art. This is Isbell’s ninth solo release (and sixth with backing band the 400 Unit) and the man somehow just keeps getting better.

Actually, I take that back. “Getting better” suggests his early work was any less resonant and assured than the latest collection, and that’s simply not the case. He emerged from his six years with the Drive-By Truckers as a fully-formed, brilliant artist whose every release demands attention.

This one rocks a little harder, at times, than his earlier releases but also features some of his most delicate and personal songs. Lyrically, he mines stories of addiction and heartbreak for beautiful street smart poetry. Consider these lines from today’s SOTD: “My mama spent every day alone in a house with noise and names / She got so tired of putting out fires she just laid down in the flames.” Wow. And the whole album is filled with poignant observations like that one.

I need to give Weathervanes more time to fully appreciate its quality, but I won’t hesitate to give it a hearty recommendation.

[Verse 1]
Are you looking to be alone
Or can I sit with you a while?
I don’t want to be a stranger anymore
And you won’t even have to smile
We can talk about the rain
How it can’t seem to stop
Something stupid like the football game
Or I can tell you where to shop

[Chorus 1]
We’re running out of options
It’s time to close the tab
If you insist on being lonely
Let me put you in a cab

[Verse 2]
Are you looking for something easy?
Do you need to feel alive?
Do you crave a love that tears through your life
Like a Category 5?
My mama spent every day alone
In a house with noise and names
She got so tired of putting out fires
She just laid down in the flames

[Chorus 2]
We’re running out of options
I’ve told you all my jokes
If you insist on being lonely
Can you leave a couple smokes?

[Verse 3]
I could lie to you all night
Say I saw you in a dream
We don’t have to get to know each other better
Let it be just how it seems
I won’t ask you for your number
Don’t even need to know your name
I’m too tired to get excited
And I’m too old to be ashamed

[Chorus 3]
We’re running out of options
I’ll give you time to think
If you insist on being lonely
Let me leave you to your drink

[Chorus 4]
We’re running out of options
I’ll wait outside the door
If you insist on being lonely
I might wait a minute more

Doesn’t this have a Paul Simon feel from the Graceland album? I really like this.

I have, indeed, listened to Weathervane in its entirety and agree that it’s incredibly special.

Daniel reminded me that today is #NewMusicFriday and I reminded him that newly discovered music is just as good.

Thank you for sharing your insights into artists you discover and love over all these many years, even if I’m sometimes a decade late to the listening party.
