Song of the Day #5,476: ‘Thinking About You’ – Beck

I read in the New York Times last week that Beck has a new song out with the alternative band Phoenix, with whom he will be touring. I decided to feature it this week along with some other recent releases.

When looking up that song, a fun Euro pop track called ‘Odyssey,’ I came across another new Beck tune, this one released in February. ‘Thinking About You’ is in the vein of his albums Sea Change and Morning Phase — my favorite flavor of Beck — so I called an audible and featured it instead.

I don’t know which of these singles will be more representative of his next album, the first since 2019’s Hyperspace, but I sure hope it’s this one. As much as I love fun and funky Beck, I can’t get enough of his melancholy lovesick ballads.

No new album has been announced, so it could be that both of these releases are one-offs. At any rate, they offer a nice glimpse at the breadth of his talent.

[Verse 1]
I pull the curtain
And lay in bed
I’ve got fifteen movies of you
Playing in my head

[Chorus]
Chasing the moonlight
Watching the ocean turn blue
Just thinking about you
Thinking about you

[Verse 2]
Forty roses
Couldn’t cover my grave
No cross and rosary
For my soul to save

[Chorus]
Wanna believe in something
It don’t even have to be true
Just thinking about you
Thinking about you

[Bridge]
There’s a crossroads
I’ve been standing on
It was just a back road to Babylon
And she’s gone
And she’s gone

[Instrumental Break]

[Verse 3]
Wayward angel
Morning dove
Don’t treat me like a stranger
The other side of love

[Chorus]
I crossed seven oceans
And painted your highway blue
Just thinking about you
Thinking about you

[Outro]
There’s a high road
I’ve been standing on
It was just a back road to Babylon
And she’s gone
She’s gone

I appreciate the diversity of Beck’s work, but, like you, prefer his more mellow sounding songs. Perhaps the new album will be a nice mix of both.
