Song of the Day #5,451: ‘Funny How Time Slips Away’ – Tina Turner

Tina Turner released her first two solo albums — Tina Turns the Country On! and Acid Queen — while still recording with Ike Turner. But in 1976, the two split for good after he beat her up in a Dallas hotel. Turner fled to a Ramada Inn across the street, carrying only “36 cents and a Mobil card,” and was given a room by the understanding manager. This event is dramatized in the great 1993 film What’s Love Got to Do with It.

Tina was granted a divorce in 1978, after which she released her third solo album and first without the influence of Ike. If life were a movie, that album — Rough — would have been a massive success. Alas, none of its singles charted, though the album was well-received by critics.

Rough finds Tina doing what she did so well throughout her career — making other people’s songs entirely her own. Two standout examples are Elton John’s ‘The Bitch is Back’ and Willie Nelson’s ‘Funny How Time Slips Away.’

[Verse 1]
Well hello there
My, it’s been a long long time
How am I doing
Oh well I guess I’m doing fine
It’s been so long since I’ve seen you

[Chorus]
It seems like yesterday
Ain’t it funny how time slips away

[Verse 2]
How’s your new love
I guess she’s doing fine
I heard you told her
That you would love her till the end of time
Well you know, that’s the same thing
That you told me

[Chorus]
It seems like yesterday
Ain’t it funny how time slips away

[Verse 3]
I got to go now
But I guess I’ll see you somewhere around
I don’t know when though, oh
Because I never know when I’ll be back in town
Please remember what I told you
Well I just want to say

[Bridge]
That it’s so funny
How time slips away
That it’s so funny
How time slips away

[Outro]
Ain’t it funny
How time slips away
Ain’t it funny
How time slips away
Ain’t it funny
How time slips away
Ain’t it funny
How time slips away
