No rundown of 2022’s best musical moments would be complete without a shout-out to likely Best Song winner ‘Naatu Naatu.’ This ecstatic dance number is a highlight of director S. S. Rajamouli’s historic drama/action epic RRR.
I’ll have more to say about RRR in the coming weeks, but for now I’ll just marvel at the Indian tradition of dropping elaborate song-and-dance routines in the middle of just about any movie. That demolishing of genre lines makes for such an unpredictable moviegoing adventure.
While often scenes like this are offered up simply for entertainment purposes, ‘Naatu Naatu’ is not just window dressing. It deepens the relationship between the film’s two main characters and the divide between them and the antagonists. But it’s also a tremendous amount of fun.
Shout out to actors N. T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan, two of India’s biggest stars, for fully committing to this elaborate choreography. Imagine Tom Cruise and The Rock throwing down like this in between action scenes.

Certainly a joyful scene, but I suspect the Oscar will be going to Rihanna.
Wonder if Bambauch was inspired by Indian cinema to weave the dance of life into his film, though he chickened out and stuck it at the end.
Before I was familiar with this tradition, I recall being delightfully shocked when the characters/actors in Slumdog Millionaire burst into an elaborate dance number at the conclusion of that film.
Hoping Dana is warming up to watching this one!
I love the lyrics! Want to see this film, looks like fun.
I’m definitely rooting for this to take home the Oscar – although I haven’t seen the film yet.
I was waiting for an IMAX return, but maybe I’ll cave and watch at home soon. I know this would be huge for the Telugu community – and it’s wonderful to see this being celebrated in America.
I, for one, would love to formally request a Tom Cruise and The Rock dance break in an upcoming film.
