Song of the Day #5,323: ‘Hot Stuff’ – Donna Summer

The final artist inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013 as a performer was Donna Summer, the Queen of Disco and one of the most iconic singer-songwriters of the 70s and 80s.

Summer was first eligible for the Hall in 2000 but didn’t receive her first nomination until 2008. She was nominated in ’08, ’10, ’11 and ’12 before finally making the cut in 2013. Sadly, she died of lung cancer in 2012 before she made it in.

Summer’s 13-year wait for a seat in the Hall, and a posthumous one at that, is a travesty. She is one of the most beloved and top-selling artists of all time, a disco pioneer who crossed over to R&B and rock (just listen to the guitar solo in today’s SOTD). She placed 32 singles in Billboard’s Hot 100, including 14 in the top ten and four at #1.

Of course, I shouldn’t throw stones at the Hall of Fame. I’m also guilty of not giving Summer her due — this is her first song to appear on the blog. Reading about her impressive career, including formative years working with Giorgio Moroder in Germany, suggests I have a good candidate for my next deep dive.

[Verse 1]
Sittin’ here eatin’ my heart out waitin’
Waitin’ for some lover to call
Dialed about a thousand numbers lately
Almost rang the phone off the wall

[Chorus]
Lookin’ for some hot stuff, baby, this evenin’
I need some hot stuff, baby, tonight
I want some hot stuff, baby, this evenin’
Gotta have some hot stuff, gotta have some love tonight
(Hot stuff)
I need hot stuff
I want some hot stuff
I need hot stuff

[Verse 2]
Lookin’ for a lover who needs another
Don’t want another night on my own
Wanna share my love with a warm blooded lover
Wanna bring a wild man back home

[Chorus]
Gotta have some hot love, baby, this evenin’
I need some hot stuff, baby, tonight
I want some hot stuff, baby, this evenin’
Gotta have some lovin’, gotta have love tonight (Hot stuff)
I need hot stuff
Hot love, lookin’ for hot love

[Guitar Solo]

[Bridge]
Hot, hot, hot, hot stuff
Hot, hot, hot
Hot, hot, hot, hot stuff
Hot, hot, hot

[Chorus]
How’s about some hot stuff, baby, this evenin’?
I need some hot stuff baby, tonight
Gimme a little hot stuff, baby, this evenin’
Hot stuff, baby, gonna need your love tonight (Hot stuff)
I need hot love
Lookin’ for hot stuff, wanna have hot love

[Verse 3]
Sittin’ here eatin’ my heart out, no reason
Won’t spend another night on my own
I dialed about a hundred numbers lately
I’m bound to find somebody home

[Chorus]
Gonna have some hot stuff, baby, this evenin’
I need some hot stuff, baby, tonight
Lookin’ for my hot stuff, baby, this evenin’
Need some lovin’, baby, gonna need your love tonight

[Outro]
Hot stuff, baby, this evenin’
I need some hot stuff, baby, tonight, yeah, yeah
I want some hot stuff, baby, this evenin’
I want some hot stuff, baby, tonight, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, now
Hot stuff, baby
I need your hot stuff, baby, tonight
I want your hot stuff, baby, this evenin’
Hot stuff, baby, gonna need your love tonight

  1. Dana Gallup says:

At one time in the late 70s/early 80s, there was such a backlash against disco by rock fans, with the whole “Disco Sucks” mantra, that I wonder if that prejudice carried over among the Rock Hall nominating committee to delay Summers’ admission.

  2. Amy says:

I remember thinking it was so cool when Donna Summer and Barbra Streisand teamed up for “Enough is Enough.” Summer surely belongs in the Music Hall of Fame, and I’m so sorry she died before enjoying that honor and celebration.
