Song of the Day #5,082: ‘Sun is Shining’ – Bob Marley and the Wailers

Bob Marley averaged an album per year through the 70s, a decade that saw reggae grow from its humble Jamaican roots to a global phenomenon, with Marley as its figurehead.

In 1978, Marley returned to Jamaica after a brief exile in London, and released the exuberant Kaya to coincide with his homecoming.

While Marley’s previous few albums were a mix of political and personal content, Kaya was a laid-pack paean to love, peace, and marijuana.

Marley received some criticism for softening his tone, though you’d think a guy who was shot two years earlier would get a pass for deciding to chill out for a spell.

Subject matter aside, Kaya is a glorious listen, finding Marley and the Wailers at the top of their game musically and featuring some wonderful songs. A couple of tracks are re-recordings of material first featured on 1971’s Soul Revolution Part II, given much fuller life here.

The album also features ‘Is This Love,’ one of Marley’s most-beloved tracks. Together, Exodus and Kaya form the most potent one-two punch in Marley’s catalog.

[Pre-Chorus]
Sun is shining, the weather is sweet
Make you want to move your dancing feet
To the rescue, here I am
Want you to know, you all, where I stand

[Chorus]
(Monday morning) here I am
Want you to know just if you can
(Tuesday evening) where I stand
(Wednesday morning) Tell myself a new day is rising
(Thursday evening) get on the rise
A new day is dawning
(Friday morning) here I am
(Saturday evening) want you to know just
Want you to know just where I stand

[Verse 1]
When the morning gathers the rainbow
Want you to know I’m a rainbow too
So to the rescue, here I am
Want you to know just if you can
Where I stand, know, know, know, know, know, know, know, know

We’ll lift our heads and give Jah praises

[Pre-Chorus]
Sun is shining, the weather is sweet
Make you want to move your dancing feet
To the rescue, here I am
Want you to know, you all, where I stand

[Chorus]
(Monday morning) here I am
Want you to know just if you can
(Tuesday evening) where I stand
(Wednesday morning) Tell myself a new day is rising
(Thursday evening) get on the rise
A new day is dawning
(Friday morning) here I am
(Saturday evening) want you to know just
Want you to know just where I stand

[Verse 2]
To the rescue, to the rescue
To the rescue, to the rescue
Awake from your sleep and slumber
Today could bring your lucky number

[Outro]
Sun is shining and the weather is sweet
Sun is shining

So, I guess if I were ever to venture beyond the greatest hits, Exodus and Kaya are the ones to hear.
