Song of the Day #4,979: ‘Burn This Disco Out’ – Michael Jackson

To help appreciate the astounding popularity of Michael Jackson, consider that 1979’s Off the Wall sold more than 20 million copies worldwide… and it’s his fifth best-selling album.

What’s nuts is that the four albums Jackson released before this one, all between 1972 and 1975 on Motown Records, barely made a dent. Those records, recorded by a teenaged Jackson in a style very much like his work with the Jackson 5, showed few hints of the R&B/disco juggernaut to come.

Jackson wanted to take his music in a different direction, and enlisted producer Quincy Jones to help craft an infectious blend of disco and funk. Jones would go on to produce Jackson’s two top-selling albums, Thriller and Bad.

I’m less familiar with Off the Wall than Thriller, but I still feel it’s probably the better album. Maybe that’s because it’s less ubiquitous, and less defined by its biggest hits.

I’ve posted under a dozen Michael Jackson songs on the blog, out of nearly 5,000 total, which suggests I should add him to my growing list of Deep Dive candidates. I’m curious about those first four albums, would like to spend more time with this one, and could even find time for his final release.

[Verse 1]
There’s a stampede
And it’s comin’ after you
You can take it
If you only let your feelings through

[Pre-Chorus]
So DJ, spin the sounds
There ain’t no way that you’re gonna let us down
Gonna dance, gonna burn this disco out

[Chorus]
Groove all night
Keep the boogie alright
Get that sound
Everybody just get on down

[Verse 2]
Got a hot foot
Better freak across the floor
Join the party
And we’ll keep you movin’, that’s for sure

[Pre-Chorus]
So DJ, spin the sounds
There ain’t no way that you’re gonna sit us down
Gonna dance ’til we burn this disco out

[Chorus]
Groove all night
Keep the boogie alright
Get that sound
Everybody just get on down

[Bridge]
Once you get the beat inside your feet
There ain’t no way to stop, you movin’ good
Now the weekend’s come, it’s time for fun
You got to groove just like you know you should
People now

[Verse 3]
Are you ready
Won’t you rock across the room
Got a feelin’
That we’re gonna raise the roof off soon

[Pre-Chorus]
So DJ, spin the sounds
There ain’t no way that you’re gonna sit us down
Gonna dance ’til we burn this disco out

[Chorus]
Groove all night
Keep the boogie alright (Groove on)
Get that sound
Everybody just get on down
Groove all night (Groove on)
[Pre-Chorus]
So DJ, spin the sounds
There ain’t no way that you’re gonna sit us down
Gonna dance ’til we burn this disco out

[Chorus]
Groove all night (Groove on)
Keep the boogie alright
Gonna dance, gonna shout ’til we burn this disco out
(Groove on)
Get that sound
Everybody get down tonight (Get down)
Gonna dance, gonna shout, gonna burn this disco out
Groove all night
Keep the boogie alright
Gonna dance, gonna shout, gonna burn this disco out
Get that sound
Everybody get down tonight
Gonna dance, gonna shout, gonna burn this disco out
Groove all night
Keep the boogie alright
Gonna dance, gonna shout, gonna burn this disco out
Get that sound
Everybody get down tonight
Gonna dance, gonna shout, gonna burn this disco out

OFF THE WALL is my favorite MJ album. Thanks for sharing this track.

  2. Peg says:

Just Yesterday we were talking about Quincy Jones’s influence and his impact on Sinatra and Jackson’s music with Daniel Amy and Dana. We also reminisced about seeing the Jackson concert at the Orange Bowl. I loved watching him perform.

  3. Dana Gallup says:

To add to Peg’s comment, Daniel pointed out how Sinatra’s album LA is My Lady has a lot of the same production qualities as Thriller.
