Vacation is over! I hope you enjoyed the two weeks of clips from movie musicals.
Getting back into the swing of things, I’m returning to my Rock & Roll Hall of Fame series, wherein I feature a recent class of inductees. I’ve covered the five classes between 2016-2020, so that brings me to the eight members of the class of 2015.
The “5” Royales, an early R&B vocal group, made it to the Hall in 2015 in the ‘Early Influences’ category. This category recognizes acts that helped shape rock-n-roll without enjoying the commercial success of artists inducted as ‘Performers.’
The “5” Royales are acknowledged for their blend of gospel and doo-wop, and for writing and performing a number of songs that went on to be hits for other artists. Those hits includes ‘Tell the Truth,’ ‘Think,’ and most notably today’s SOTD, ‘Dedicated to the One I Love.’ Both The Shirelles and The Mamas & The Papas scored top five hits with this song.
The band made it into the Rock Hall in 2015 after being nominated twice before, in 2002 and 2004. Sadly, none of the band’s members were alive to receive the recognition, as the last surviving member passed away in 2008 at the age of 82.
While I’m away from you, my baby
I know it’s hard for you, my baby
Because it’s hard for me, my baby
But the darkest hour is just before day
[Chorus]
Each night before you go to bed, my baby
Whisper a little prayer for me, my baby
And let’s tell all those stars above
That this is dedicated to the one I love
Life can never be exactly
Like we want it to be
But I can be satisfied
Just knowing you love me
But there’s one thing I want
You to do especially for me
And it’s something that everybody needs
[Repeat Chorus 2x]
This is dedicated to the one I love
Always enjoy the Rock Hall weeks, and can’t quibble with this selection, though it’s a shame that none of the band members were alive to see their induction.
I agree with Dana especially the part about them missing out on their achievements 😢
