Song of the Day #4,473: ‘Carried Me With You’ – Brandi Carlile

Continuing my countdown of every Pixar movie…

#14. Onward (2020)
(up one spot from previous ranking)

Pixar’s most recent release was a pleasant surprise, given a marketing campaign that promised a lightweight kiddie flick (not there’s anything wrong with a lightweight kiddie flick — and Onward is one, to an extent). In its final act, the movie finds surprising emotional depth in the story of two brothers on a quest to magically reunite with their dead father.

The film’s universe, a fairy tale land in which magic has long since been replaced by technology, is imaginatively conceived and rendered. I especially liked a dragon pulled together from pieces of a school building, including the smiling mascot for a face. I do wish the character of the mother (voice by Julia Louis Dreyfus) had a more meaningful role.

Note: I love Brandi Carlile’s end credits song, featured today, and I really hope she lands an Oscar nomination.

#13. Incredibles 2 (2018)
(unchanged from previous ranking)

Given that The Incredibles is one of my favorite Pixar releases (no spoilers on its placement on this list), and Incredibles 2 continues that film’s tradition in so many ways, I’m a bit perplexed that this movie fell so far on this list.

Part of that is a testament to the greatness of the movies yet to come, no doubt, and part of it is that all of the non-Toy Story sequels wound up in the bottom half of my rankings.

I have two minor quibbles with this film. One, the villain’s identity is obvious so early that attempts at suspense and surprise fall flat. And two, it sometimes falls into the common sequel trap of playing the hits (as in, we need a scene in Edna Mode’s lair because that killed in the first movie).

That said, I am still in love with the retro futuristic design of this world and the familiar dynamics of the Parr family. And it’s great to see Elastigirl take center stage, as Holly Hunter remains one of my all-time favorite Pixar performers.

[Verse 1]
You’re the soul who understands
The scars that made me who I am
Through the drifting sands of time
I got your back and you got mine

[Pre-Chorus 1]
If you bear a heavy load
I’ll be your wheels, I’ll be the road
I’ll see us through the thick and thin
For love and loss until the end

[Chorus]
‘Cause you carried me with you
From the highest of the peaks
To the darkness of the blue
I was just too blind to see
Like a lighthouse in a storm
You were always guiding me
Yeah, it’s true
You carried me with you

[Verse 2]
From the day it all began
Yeah, you were there, you took my hand
And when I hurt a bit too deep
You watched me as I fell asleep

[Pre-Chorus 2]
And when my head was in the clouds
You found a way to pull me out
You picked my heart up off the ground
And it showed me love was all around

[Chorus]
Yeah, you carried me with you
From the highest of the peaks
To the darkness of the blue
I was just too blind to see
Like a lighthouse in a storm
You were always guiding me
Yeah, it’s true
You carried me with you

[Bridge]
Oh, we’ll be sittin’ on the world together (Ooh-ooh)
Watchin’ as the days turn into night (Ooh-ooh)
We know how to brave the stormy weather (Ooh-ooh)
And we’re never givin’ up without a fight

[Pre-Chorus 1]
If you should ever bear a heavy load
I’ll be your wheels, I’ll be the road
I’ll see us through the thick and thin
For love and loss until the end

[Chorus]
‘Cause you carried me with you
From the highest of the peaks
To the darkness of the blue
I was just too blind to see
Like a lighthouse in a storm
You were always guiding me
Yeah, it’s true
You carried me with you

[Outro]
Oh, you carried me with you

  1. Dana Gallup says:

I enjoyed both these films and take no issue with your rankings.

  2. Amy says:

I loved Onward and would put it higher than Incredibles 2. I need to see it again.

  3. The Cool Guy (Daniel) says:

I’ve only seen Onward once. That being said I instantly felt it was top tier Pixar. It had all the elements of the greats! Great voice performances from Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, stunning animation, laugh out loud humor, incredibly touching. I feel this film should be higher.

Incredibles 2 I need to watch again as I watched it in a back to back showing with the first one which is a perfect film. In comparison the sequel was clearly inferior but watching it outside of that setting, I might enjoy it more on its own. Where this film shined to me was in its humor. Where it faltered was introducing way too many characters, shoehorning in a plot that was not relevant to the time it was set, and as you said the villain. It would go much lower on my list!

  4. Maddie says:

Pretty much agreed with much of what you said and what Daniel said in his comment! Loved Onward even though I was sad not to have been able to catch it on a big screen 😦

Speaking of, very upset about the announcement that Soul will be dropped on Disney Plus. I hate the constant undermining of important animated films while many of Disney’s live action are waiting patiently for that grand theatrical return…
