Song of the Day #4,401: ‘Mind Eraser’ – CRUISR

One of the catchiest songs Fiona has unearthed, ‘Mind Eraser’ is a 2018 single from the band CRUISR, a Philadelphia-based pop trio.
activism,
CRUISR has released a few EPs and, according to their out-of-date website, has a studio album due in 2019. Guess that didn’t happen. The band’s Twitter account is pretty active, though it doesn’t have much to say about music, instead bashing President Trump and promoting social justice. Nice job, CRUISR!

On Twitter, they also throw major shade at the former Lady Antebellum, who changed their name to Lady A in a perfect example of performative activism, then sued a Black performer who has been using the name Lady A for two decades. I like this band more by the minute.

[Verse 1]
How did I get here? Why do I get upset?
Trying to find you, trying to recollect
I, I forget it all
All of my dreams and every nightmare
All of my teeth could’ve fallen out my mouth but
I, I forget it all

[Chorus]
So tell me why I can’t forget you, no
And what I gotta do to let you go
You’re getting in my head
And getting me upset again
I need a mind eraser

[Verse 2]
I used to dip, I did the “Electric Slide”
The “Macarena”, learned it when I was only nine
And I forget it all
“Down Down Baby”, and “Mary Mack”
I wanna play along but I’m drawing a blank, yeah
I, I forget it all

[Chorus]
So tell me why I can’t forget you no
And what I gotta do to let you go
You’re getting in my head
And getting me upset again
I need a mind eraser

[Post-Chorus]
Oh my my, mind eraser
Oh my my, I need a mind eraser

[Bridge]
I want a way to black it out baby
Find me a way to wash it all away
I want a way to black it out baby
All you gotta do is slip my mind

[Chorus]
So tell me why I can’t forget you no
And what I gotta do to let you go
You’re getting in my head
And getting me upset again
I need a mind eraser
So tell me why I can’t forget you no
And what I gotta do to let you go
You’re getting in my head
And getting me upset again
I need a mind eraser

[Outro]
Mind eraser, mind eraser
Mind eraser, mind eraser
Mind eraser, mind eraser
Mind eraser, mind eraser

The Lady A lawsuit is not quite so “black and white.” The band has actually owned the trade name “Lady A” for over a decade and was not asking the Black singer to stop using the name, but rather wanted the two to co-exist; however, the singer demanded $10 million to release the rights. The suit is not asking for money, only that the band have the right to use the name. Here’s an article about the dispute. https://www.rollingstone.com/pro/news/lady-a-lady-antebellum-lawsuit-case-1026653/

Regardless of the legal fine print, it’s a horrible PR move to sue a Black woman who has been performing under that name for 20 years, especially when the point behind the name change in the first place was to respect Black rights.
