Fiona has a soft spot for mellow, dreamy pop, and she shares with me a love of melancholy music. I’ve gotten her hooked on songs by Aimee Mann and Simon & Garfunkel, and she has returned the favor by digging up majestically sad gems like this one.
Day Wave is a project by Oakland musician Jackson Phillip, who records solo and hires backing musicians for live shows. His debut album, The Day We Had, came out in 2017, following up on a couple of EP releases.
A quick sample of his output reveals that most of his songs have a similar vibe, but I think Fiona hit on the best of them with ‘Headcase.’
Hold on tight
I won’t go alone
Home tonight
I won’t go alone
‘Cause I don’t feel right
Anymore, anymore
‘Cause I don’t feel right
Anymore, anymore
[Pre-Chorus]
That’s okay
You’re just the same
That’s okay
You’re just the same
[Chorus]
You said, bury me alive this time
Well I can try, but you’re always on my mind
You said, bury me alive this time
Well I can try, but you’re always on my mind
[Verse 2]
Don’t let go
I don’t wanna be alone
I won’t let it show
I don’t wanna be alone
‘Cause I don’t feel right
Anymore, anymore
‘Cause I don’t feel right
Anymore, anymore
[Pre-Chorus]
That’s okay
You’re just the same
That’s okay
You’re just the same
[Chorus]
You said, bury me alive this time
Well I can try, but you’re always on my mind
You said, bury me alive this time
Well I can try, but you’re always on my mind
[Bridge]
Hold on tight
I won’t go alone
Home tonight
I won’t go alone
‘Cause I don’t feel right
Anymore, anymore
‘Cause I don’t feel right
Anymore, anymore
[Chorus]
You said, bury me alive this time
Well I can try, but you’re always on my mind
You said, bury me alive this time
Well I can try, but you’re always on my mind
[Outro]
Bury me alive this time
Well I can try, but you’re always on my mind
Bury me alive this time
Well I can try, but you’re always on my mind
Though I tend to gravitate toward songs and artists with a more gritty sound, as far as smooth melancholy pop goes, this is quite nice,
Another good pick Fiona!
