Through more than ten years and nearly 4,000 Songs of the Day, I have written exclusively about songs written and performed by other people. That’s a long time to spend as an observer.
Not many people know this about me, but I have dabbled in a bit of songwriting myself. And today, I’ve summoned the courage to post one of my own songs.
The title of this track, ‘Delicate,’ was inspired by a recent family trip to Utah, where we saw the Delicate Arch (pictured above). The idea of this simple rock surviving the elements for millions of years, during which human existence is merely a blip, got me thinking about my own resilience on a much smaller scale.
This recording was made on my slightly out-of-tune piano, so please be kind in judging both the music and my vocals.
But I’ll survive with every falter
Pre-Chorus:
I’m holding on to you
I’m holding on to you
Chorus:
And I won’t fight
The darkness is blind
And I can’t win
‘Cause I am delicate
Weakness kills
But no one’s bleeding
And in my bones
A heart deceiving
[Pre-Chorus]
[Chorus]
Bridge:
I will fear
Uncharted waters
Hold my breath
With drowning fighters
(Special thanks to Haley Dreis for the lyrics)
