Song of the Day #3,761: ‘First Timer’ – Elliott Smith

The Random iTunes Fairy has a thing for Elliott Smith. Today’s SOTD is the seventh Smith tune to pop up on Random Weekends, and the third from the double album New Moon.

I don’t know how that stacks up against other artists. I’ve long regretted that I never kept detailed stats of Random Weekends so I could do exactly the kind of analysis I’m wondering about now. But my gut tells me Smith is better represented than most.

Released in 2007, four years after Smith’s death, New Moon is a collection of unreleased tracks from early in his career. This album and another posthumous release sold more copies than anything he produced when he was alive.

I’m a first timer, wishing I was someone else
When I see you by yourself
In a corridor where you find yourself now blocked
By a door you locked

You won’t do what the doctor ordered
You won’t see someone else
Come on back to me, my bright tomorrow
You say you feel hollow and you know it’s cause you are
Well at least so far

I think of you with hesitation
I think of you too hard
Come on back to me
But don’t make me sorry

I’m a first timer, wishing I’d been someone else
Seeing you by yourself
Seeing you by yourself

  1. Dana Gallup says:

I’m always curious with these posthumous releases who is deciding to do the releases and whether the artist would have approved. Obviously, the first question is easier to answer than the second.😊
