Today’s Random Weekend selection offers up the rare opportunity to hear a song, and an artist, for the very first time.
As with so many albums in my music collection, I don’t know how I came into possession of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s self-titled debut album. Nor do I know anything about this band; not their country of origin, number of members, musical genre, nothing. So this is truly a moment of discovery.
Based only on the playful lyrics of today’s SOTD, I’m going to guess they’re a five-member West Coast band with an alt-pop sound similar to, say, Barenaked Ladies.
OK, let’s test my prediction.
A quick scan of Wikipedia shows they hail from Philadelphia and New York (my second guess) and did indeed have five members until four of them left, leaving lead singer Alec Ounsworth to continue under the band name by himself. Their genre is described as indie rock/indie pop. I pretty much hit the nail on the head. Now let’s see if I like the song.
Not bad. A little mumbly but certainly not offensive. The rest of the album is probably worth a listen.
Wineglass in her hand
Sally’s rearrangement
I’ll never understand
But little did I wonder
(little did I try)
Her little bit of thunder
Her little bit of lightning
(lightning)
Sucka sucka MC
Sing my favorite song
Sing it for the dancing
Sing it for somber one
Curious velocity
Brought me to a halt
Flatten me my baby
Gimmie some salt
She was always asking
Where’s the nearest bar?
Pedal on the gas kid
Getting playing hard hard
I was in the kitchen
Cooking up a shark
Sally’s out preparing
Witty remarks
I hear some Talking Heads influence in this song.
