I’ve crossed two more movies off of my 2016 to-see list: Hidden Figures and Green Room. You’d be hard-pressed to find two less similar films.
The former is a very by-the-book, emotionally satisfying tale of three Black women who broke ground as NASA scientists in the 60s. The latter is a brutal thriller about a punk band trapped in a nightclub by a group of vicious white supremacists.
Both are very successful on their own terms. Hidden Figures is a great example of classic Hollywood filmmaking. Its beats are no less satisfying for being so predictable. It serves up exactly what you want and hits no false notes — particularly in its casting, where Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and a marvelous Janelle Monae (along with ever-dependable Kevin Costner in a supporting role) breathe vivid life into their heroic characters.
Green Room belongs to a very predictable genre (horror/thriller) but it feels like a brand-new take on familiar territory. It has emotional beats you don’t expect in this sort of movie. It also has Sir Patrick Stewart as the head of a neo-Nazi gang, an inspired bit of casting. This is a movie I would have been gonzo over in my 20s.
This film is completely off my radar screen and, while I am intrigued by Patrick Stewart’s participation, I don’t see myself gravitating to this punk themed horror/thriller any time soon.
