Carly Rae Jepsen went from a likely one-hit wonder (for 2012’s ‘Call Me Maybe’) to one of the most critically-acclaimed pop singer-songwriters working today.
Unfortunately, major sales didn’t follow, but I get the feeling Jepsen would rather be respected than rich. Still, I’m convinced that if Taylor Swift had released Jepsen’s 2015 album E*MO*TION instead of her own 1989, it would have been an even bigger smash.
On the one year anniversary of E*MO*TION, Jepsen announced an EP titled E*MO*TION: Side B, a collection of eight songs that didn’t make the cut on its 17-track predecessor.
Unsurprisingly, every cut on this EP is a winner. These songs would have fit just fine on E*MO*TION, not that anything on that record warranted replacing. It’s just further proof that Jepsen is at the top of her game creatively.
You’re king of the castle
Whenever you’re here, you know it feels right
Don’t need to worry
Don’t need a moon, I’ve got your spotlight
[Pre-Chorus]
I want you to
Do you want to?
I want you to stay tonight
I want you to say “I want you too”
[Chorus]
He never wants to strip down to his feelings
He never wants to kiss and close his eyes
He never wants to cry-y-y, cry-y-y
I never really know when he’ll be leaving
And even with hello I hear goodbye
He always makes me cry-y-y, cry-y-y
[Verse 2]
Wake up without you
Flood in my room, I see your headlights
And you got your reasons
You’ve got a way that makes it alright
[Pre-Chorus]
I want you to
Do you want to?
I want you to stay tonight
I want you to say “I want you too”
[Chorus]
He never wants to strip down to his feelings
He never wants to kiss and close his eyes
He never wants to cry-y-y, cry-y-y
I never really know when he’ll be leaving
And even with hello I hear goodbye
He always makes me cry-y-y, cry-y-y
[Bridge]
Wake up without you
Wake up without you
Wake up without you
I wake up without you, boy
Cry-y-y, cry-y-y
Wake up without you
Wake up without you
Wake up without you
I wake up without you, boy
Cry-y-y, cry-y-y
You’re king of the castle
Whenever you’re here, you know it feels right
Don’t need to worry
[Chorus]
He never wants to strip down to his feelings
He never wants to kiss and close his eyes
He never wants to cry-y-y, cry-y-y
I never really know when he’ll be leaving
And even with hello I hear goodbye
He always makes me cry-y-y, cry-y-y
Cry-y-y
I like her sound, particularly “Call me Maybe,” which is one of the more infectious songs of all time. Though she may never achieve the success of Swift, I hope she becomes more than a one hit wonder commercially.
Yesss love this song and love love love Carly. Can’t wait for her next album.
lol meant to leave that comment on the latest SOTD, but this holds true for every one of her songs so… here we are.
