In a recent issue of Entertainment Weekly, the magazine’s editors took advantage of the Adele hysteria to highlight about a dozen emerging artists with a similar sound and sensibility.
I’ll showcase the songs of a few of those artists this week and give my first impressions.
This isn’t a genre I generally like so I’m curious to see if any of these women capture my attention out of the gate.
First up is Andra Day, a 30-year-old California native who attended San Diego’s School of Creative and Performing Arts and made her name recording YouTube covers of unlikely tracks such as Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself.’
Her debut album, Cheers to the Fall, dropped in August and today’s SOTD, ‘Rise Up,’ is the second single.
The Adele influence is certainly strong with this one. The song has more of a gospel flair but vocally they’re very similar. Good stuff.
