I wish a fond Happy Birthday to America today, a little prouder of my country after the momentous news of a week ago that same sex couples have the right to marry.
We’ll celebrate the 4th of July with a randomly selected song from across the pond, written and performed by a gay icon: ‘Bigmouth Strikes Again’ from The Smith’s classic album The Queen is Dead.
This song (a favorite of mine) touches on the hot water Morrissey constantly found himself in due to his habit of giving voice to whatever catty thoughts popped into his head.
When I said I’d like to smash every tooth
In your head
Oh…sweetness, sweetness, I was only joking
When I said by rights you should be
Bludgeoned in your bed
And now I know how Joan of Arc felt
Now I know how Joan of Arc felt
As the flames rose to her roman nose
And her Walkman started to melt
Oh…
Bigmouth, la la la…bigmouth, la la la…
Bigmouth strikes again
And I’ve got no right to take my place
With the Human race
And now I know how Joan of Arc felt
Now I know how Joan of Arc felt
As the flames rose to her roman nose
And her hearing aid started to melt
Do I have the right not to play Morrissey at a gay wedding? applesauce!
