I don’t know where John Mayer will end up when the history of pop music in the 21st century is written.
Will he be remembered more for his frat-boy antics and failed relationships or for his guitar chops that regularly put him onstage alongside idols such as B.B. King and Eric Clapton — legends who nod to his musical skills as very much in league with their own.
Will he get credit for his songwriting, which can be a bit lazy in an adult contemporary way but can also be achingly beautiful and even wise?
Mayer has sold 20 million albums, won seven Grammys and consistently earned critical praise for his work, yet he still fails to earn much respect. According to the ephemeral laws of the pop culture universe, it isn’t cool to like John Mayer. Counting Crows are another act that inexplicably suffer the same fate.
All that aside, I really dig the guy’s music. Through 13 years and six albums, I’ve found his work consistently entertaining.
Too many shadows in my room
Too many hours in this midnight
Too many corners in my mind
So much to do to set my heart right
[Chorus]
Oh, it’s taking so long I could be wrong
I could be ready
Oh, but if I take my heart’s advice
I should assume it’s still unsteady
I am in repair, I am in repair
[Verse 2]
Stood on the corner for a while
To wait for the wind to blow down on me
Hoping it takes with it my old ways
And brings some brand new luck upon me
[Chorus]
[Verse 3]
And now I’m walking in a park
All of the birds they dance below me
Maybe when things turn green again
It will be good to say you know me
[Outro]
I’m not together but I’m getting there
Well, as you know, I’m not a fan and this song reaffirms my problem with him. He’s just bland. It’s the songwriting, and perhaps also his voice, with which I have a problem. He clearly plays guitar well, and the solo here is the most interesting part of this song.
I really like his voice and senjoy his music. Some things are almost inexplicable to me – like you not liking John Mayer and Clay not liking Joni Mitchell.
Are we REALLY going to compare the songwriting talents of Joni Mitchell and John Mayer?
