Song of the Day #2,288: ‘Daughter’ – Loudon Wainwright III

loudon_wainwrightI went to a wedding a few weeks back and when the bride danced with her father, it was to this Loudon Wainwright III track.

Perhaps it was the emotion of the moment, coupled with the fact that I have two daughters of my own, but I instantly fell in love with the song.

‘Daughter’ was covered by Wainwright for the Knocked Up soundtrack. The original is by a man named Peter Blegvad.

I might have to create a playlist of great father-daughter songs. This one would make the cut, along with Paul Simon’s ‘Father and Daughter‘ and ‘The Sun I Always Wanted‘ by Stew.

Any other suggestions?

Everything she sees
she says she wants.
Everything she wants
I see she gets.

That’s my daughter in the water
everything she owns I bought her
Everything she owns.
That’s my daughter in the water,
everything she knows I taught her.
Everything she knows.

Everything I say
she takes to heart.
Everything she takes
she takes apart.

That’s my daughter in the water
every time she fell I caught her.
Every time she fell.
That’s my daughter in the water,
I lost every time I fought her.
Yea, I lost every time.

Every time she blinks
she strikes somebody blind.
Everything she thinks
blows her tiny mind.
That’s my daughter in the water,
who’d have ever thought her?
Who’d have ever thought?
That’s my daughter in the water,
I lost every time I fought her
Yea, I lost every time.

  1. Dana says:

    “Gracie Girl”

    Is he related to Rufus?

  2. Clay says:

    Yep, he’s Rufus’ father.

    Gracie Girl, of course!
