Song of the Day #2,274: ‘Habits (Stay High)’ – Tove Lo

tove_loIt’s time for another installment of “What the Kids are Listening To These Days,” wherein I feature ten current hits on Billboard’s Hot 100.

With summer over and new hits slow to materialize, I’m going to have to dig pretty deep into the list to come up with ten songs I haven’t already featured on the blog.

For the third time in the past 15 years, women occupy the top five spots on the Hot 100. Meghan Trainor sits on top with ‘All About That Bass,’ followed by Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off,’ Iggy Azalea’s ‘Black Widow,’ ‘Bang Bang‘ by the trio of Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj and Jessie J and finally Minaj again with ‘Anaconda.’

All of those songs more or less suck. Let’s hope #6 breaks the trend.

I’ve come across a few references to Tove Lo’s ‘Habits (Stay High)’ but I have yet to hear it. I’ll remedy that now.

Well, it’s better than the five songs ahead of it… I will say that. Lyrically, I’m not crazy about the depiction of a woman who turns to drugs and alcohol to get over an ex. But the chorus works.

[Intro]
Oh-Ooh
Oh-Ooh
Oh-Ooh

[Verse 1]
I eat my dinner in my bathtub, then I go to sex clubs
Watchin’ freaky people gettin’ it on
It doesn’t make me nervous, if anything, I’m restless
Yeah I’ve been around and I’ve seen it all
I get home, I got the munchies, binge on all my Twinkies
Throw up in the tub and I go to sleep
And I drank up all my money, tastin’ kind of lonely

[Hook]
You’re gone and I got to stay
High, all the time, to keep you off my mind
High, all the time, to keep you off my mind
Spend my days locked in a haze
Tryna forget you, babe, I fall back down
Gotta stay high, all my life
To forget I’m missin’ you

[Verse 2]
Pick up daddies at the playground, how I spend my day time
Loosen up their frown, make ’em feel alive
Make it fast and greasy, I’m numb and way too easy

[Hook]

[Bridge x2]
Stayin’ in my play pretend where the fun ain’t got no end
Can’t go home alone again need someone to numb the pain

[Hook]

Now, wait a minute! “All About That Bass” does NOT suck. It’s a great pop song with an incredibly catchy and addictive chorus. And, while I don’t hold “Bang Bang” in as high regard, it’s pretty damn hard to get that one out of your head as well. “Shake it Off” is, to be sure, far from Swift’s best, but I would not say it “sucks.” In fact, the only one I find truly annoying is “Anaconda.”

I haven’t heard today’s song all that much, but it ain’t no “All Anout that Bass.”😄

I have to second Dana’s defense of “All About That Bass” and “Shake it Off” – those are entertaining songs! I just heard Trainor’s new song )(“Title”) today and found it compelling, too. I’m betting the next time you do this little exercise you will have two different songs by Swift and Trainor in the top ten!
