I know there aren’t a lot of Smiths fans in these parts (at least not among my frequent commenters) so I’m sure today’s Random Weekend selection will go unappreciated.
But I love it. ‘London’ is exactly the sort of track that makes this band, and the compilation album Louder Than Bombs in particular, a favorite of mine.
Louder Than Bombs is full of fast, furious little songs like this one, songs you wish were twice as long.
Or at least songs I wish were twice as long. I assume the comments will offer up another view.
Train heave on to Euston
Do you think you’ve made the right decision this time?
Oh…
You left your tired family grieving
And you think they’re sad because you’re leaving
But did you see jealousy in the eyes
Of the ones who had to stay behind?
And do you think you’ve made the right decision this time?
You left your girlfriend on the platform
With this really ragged notion that you’ll return
But she knows that when he goes
He really goes
And do you think you’ve made
The right decision this time?
Well, I was fully prepared to ay my contrarian role, but, actually, Morrisey’s singing in a faster upbeat song is far more tolerable than in his slower melancholy mode. This is still not a style of music I generally like, but it’s more tolerable than other Morrisey songs I have heard.
