I was happy to see Alfonso Cuaron take home the Best Director Oscar for his work on Gravity, even if it’s only his third or fourth best film.
I’ve been a Cuaron fan since 2001’s Y Tu Mama Tambien, and an even bigger one after Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (the best book and film in the series) and especially Children of Men.
In all of those films, his fondness for long takes deepens the drama and heightens the viewer’s emotional connection with the characters. He did it on the shoestring budget of Y Tu Mama Tambien as effectively as he did with the next-generation VFX tech of Gravity.
I was also happy that Cuaron, the first Hispanic to win Best Director, thanked his old friends and colleagues Guillermo Del Toro and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, when accepting his Oscar.
The trio, nicknamed the ‘Three Amigos,’ have long supported each other personally and professionally, even co-founding a production studio several years back. And they are responsible for some of my favorite films of the past decade or so.
In addition to the Cuaron films mentioned above, Del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth and Inarritu’s Amores Perros are especially worthy — two very different but equally brilliant works of art.
And that brings me to today’s Random SOTD, a cut from the Amores Perros soundtrack.

Very happy GE won for Gravity as well. I didn’t know about the three amigos. Talk about some talented guys getting together!
I loved y tu mama tambien, but did not see Amores Perros because I believed it to be too violent; also I’m happy he won the oscar this year as well.
