Song of the Day #2,071: ‘Talking Backwards’ – Real Estate

real_estateToday’s obscure new band is Real Estate, whose third album (Atlas) is due out this March.

The New Jersey quintet released their self-titled first record in 2009 and started to receive critical attention with their sophomore effort, Days, in 2011.

The first single from Atlas is ‘Talking Backwards.’ This is one of those situations where I wasn’t sure if the song title was the band name or vice versa. We must be running out of good band names if the best people can come up with now is Real Estate and Bleachers.

As for the song, it’s a jangly, wispy thing, so soft it’s in danger of dissolving. I kinda like it.

[Verse 1]
We can talk for hours
And the line is still engaged
We’re not getting any closer
You’re too many miles away

[Chorus]
And I might as well be talking backwards
Am I making any sense to you
And the only thing that really matters
Is the one thing I can’t seem to do

[Verse 2]
When the night was over
And the field was lit up bright
And I walked home with you
Nothing I said came out right

[Chorus x 2]

Make sense of this dream
It’s the one thing I can’t seem to do

I kinda like it too, quite a lot actually. Might have to start investing in some Real Estate.😄

There’s some reverb”y” thing happening throughout that I don’t like, so I might have to pass on this real estate.

Still, I couldn’t agree with you more about the lame band names of late. Who is coming up with these things?
