Song of the Day #2,029: ‘We Can’t Stop’ – Miley Cyrus

miley_cyrus_we_cant_stopAt #8 in the Village Voice Pazz & Jop poll is Icana Pop’s ‘I Love It’ — a song that has really grown on me since I first heard it. It’s one of those songs that’s annoying if you just listen to it, but very effective when backing up the right images.

In the ninth spot is Miley Cyrus’ ‘We Can’t Stop.’ I’m a little surprised this track outranked ‘Wrecking Ball’ (which does show up in the top twenty) but I guess it was the song that really launched Cyrus’ freakazoid year.

The song is fine, but I don’t think it would have gotten half the attention it got without the video. The same goes for Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines,’ the video of which shares its director (Diane Martel) with this one.

[Intro]
It’s our party we can do what we want
It’s our party we can say what we want
It’s our party we can love who we want
We can kiss who we want
We can screw who we want

[Verse 1]
Red cups and sweaty bodies everywhere
Hands in the air like we don’t care
Cause we came to have so much fun now
Bet somebody here might get some now
If you’re not ready to go home
Can I get a “hell no”?
Cause we gonna go all night
Till we see the sunlight, alright

[Pre-Hook]
So la-da-di-da-di we like to party
Dancing with Molly
Doing whatever we want
This is our house
This is our rules
And we can’t stop
And we won’t stop
Can’t you see it’s we who own the night?
Can’t you see it we who bout’ that life

[Hook]
And we can’t stop
And we won’t stop
We run things, things don’t run we
Don’t take nothing from nobody

[Intro]

[Verse 2]
To my homegirls here with the big butt
Shaking it like we at a strip club
Remember only God can judge ya
Forget the haters, cause somebody loves ya
And everyone in line in the bathroom
Trying to get a line in the bathroom
We all so turnt up here
Getting turnt up yea yea

[Pre-Hook]

[Hook]

[Intro]

[Bridge]
It’s our party we can do what we want to!
It’s our house we can love who we want to!
It’s our song we can sing if we want to!
It’s my mouth I can say what I want to
Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Eh!

[Hook]

I had mentioned this song in my top 10 list as sharing a spot with “Wrecking Ball.” I think it absolutely deserves recognition. While those of us who are now older and parents of kids near Miley’s age May blanch at the frank drug and sexual references, this is nevertheless a song that stands as an anthem for the twenty something’s of this generation.
and, at least for me, the video and studio production detract rather than enhance the song. I really began to appreciate this song when I heard Miley perform it acoustically on SNL. Here is a link to that excellent performance:
