Avicii – ‘Wake Me Up’
The first time I heard this song, I thought someone had remastered a Mumford and Sons tune to make a pop/dance hit. I was later disabused of that notion by my son who loves this song more than probably any other of 2013.
Anyway, borrowing from the style of Mumford and Sons is a good thing in my book and this may well be the best fusion of Celtic Folk and electronica I have ever heard. How this great song would not crack your or anyone’s “best of” list is beyond me.
[Note from Clay: I’m posting an extended remix of the song because I blogged about the original back in October. That’s also the reason I didn’t include it on my best-of countdown. It would have found a spot in the bottom half if I hadn’t already featured it, but I didn’t consider it such an oversight that I needed to work it in.]
Feeling my way through the darkness
Guided by a beating heart
I can’t tell where the journey will end
But I know where to start
They tell me I’m too young to understand
They say I’m caught up in a dream
Well life will pass me by if I don’t open up my eyes
Well that’s fine by me
[Chorus](2x)
So wake me up when it’s all over
When I’m wiser and I’m older
All this time I was finding myself
And I didn’t know I was lost
[Beat Break]
[Verse 2]
I tried carrying the weight of the world
But I only have two hands
I hope I get the chance to travel the world
But I don’t have any plans
I wish that I could stay forever this young
Not afraid to close my eyes
Life’s a game made for everyone
And love is a prize
[Chorus](2x)
[Outro](4x)
I didn’t know I was lost

Good choice, I really like this song. The lyrics are wonderful. Nicely done 🙂
I agree, great lyrics and beat!
