Song of the Day #1,955: ‘Melt My Heart to Stone’ – Adele

adele_19The Random iTunes Fairy has served up another track from Adele’s debut album, 19, apparently still derisive (or appreciative) of my dismissal of it a few weeks back.

This track is better than the last one I featured, though still fall short of the material on 21. The production is fuller and Adele, as always, is in fine voice. But the tune itself falls a little short.

The most interesting thing I learned about ‘Melt My Heart to Stone’ is that it was sampled by Childish Gambino on a song called ‘Do Ya Like.’ I like it better there.

On a related note, I’m bummed that Donald Glover won’t be a regular on Community this season. Just when I got excited about show runner Dan Harmon returning to the show, that news threw a wet blanket on things.

Right under my feet there’s air made of bricks
Pulls me down turns me weak for you
I find myself repeating like a broken tune
And I’m forever excusing your intentions
That I give in to my pretendings
Which forgive you each time
Without me knowing
They melt my heart to stone

[Chorus]
And I hear your words that I made up
You say my name like there could be an us
I best tidy up my head I’m the only one in love
I’m the only one in love

Each and every time I turn around to leave
I feel my heart begin to burst and bleed
So desperately I try to link it with my head
But instead I fall back to my knees
As you tear your way right through me
I forgive you once again
Without me knowing
You’ve burnt my heart to stone

And I hear your words that I made up
You say my name like there could be an us
I best tidy up my head I’m the only one in love
I’m the only one in love

Why do you steal my hand
Whenever I’m standing my own ground
You build me up, then leave me dead

I hear your words you made up
I say your name like there should be an us
I best tidy up my head I’m the only one, in love
I’m the only one in love

Here’s another song that has some decent bones, but really could have used some punching up by a great producer. The strings do nothing here to service the song and neither do the drums that predictably come in by the second verse. And what is withe uninspired musical break at the end?

I think if you lost the strings and brought in instrumentation that accented the melody with some staccato punctuation, it would work far better.

Oh, and that is sad news about Glover, though, at the end of the day, the success of the show, like all shows, is about writing, so I am looking forward to Harmon’s return more than I am disappointed with the absence of Glover.

Just clicked on the childish gambino link after sending my comment. Have to say I’m feeling good about my production sense after hearing Glover put life into the song with staccato background vocals and snare drum accents.😄
