Song of the Day #1,863: ‘Rivers of Babylon’ – Sinéad O’Connor

sinead_oconnor_theologySinéad O’Connor peaked in 1990 with the smash album I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, her beautiful crying face in the ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ video becoming an iconic image of the early 90s indie scene.

She followed that album two years later with a disc of covers titled Am I Not Your Girl? and released a decent but unspectacular album of original material — Universal Mother — in 1994.

I pretty much wrote her off after that, as did the rest of the world, so it was a big surprise when she returned six years later with Faith and Courage, arguably the best album of her career.

But the comeback was short lived, as O’Connor released only two covers albums over the next seven years, one of which consisted entirely of reggae songs — never a good sign.

Then, in 2007, she released the two-disc Theology, from which today’s song is taken. I would like to say that it was another return to form but the truth is, I don’t think I’ve ever listened to it all the way through. Or if I have, I’ve forgotten it, which would be even worse.

Today’s song is lovely, and a nice reminder of the gorgeous voice that once held such promise.

By the rivers of Babylon where I sat down
There I wept when I remembered Zion
By the rivers of Babylon where I sat down
There I wept when I remembered Zion

There on the poplars I broke my guitar
Because my tormentors required songs
Songs of where I’m from, songs of where I’m from
Oh, songs of Zion

If I forget You, O Jah
May both of my hands wither
And may my mouth freeze
If I forget how I felt at Your feet

If I forget You, O Jah
May both of my hands wither
May my mouth freeze
If I forget how I knelt at Your feet

By the rivers of Babylon where I sat down
There I wept when I remembered Zion
By the rivers of Babylon where I sat down
There I wept when I remembered Zion

By the rivers, rivers of Babylon
By the rivers, rivers of Babylon
By the rivers, rivers of Babylon
By the rivers, rivers of Babylon

I’m surprised you have followed her as much as you have. It’s nice to know that, even if erratically and sporadically, she has still put out some good to great material over the past 20 years.

    Great music
