Song of the Day #1,796: ‘Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” – Creedence Clearwater Revival

creedenceThe latest issue of Rolling Stone gave a rare 5-star review to John Fogerty’s new album, Wrote a Song For Everyone.

The record features Fogerty performing some of his most famous songs as duets with an eclectic mix of stars. The acts range from country artists such as Miranda Lambert, Brad Paisley and Alan Jackson, to rockers Dawes and Foo Fighters, indie jammers My Morning Jacket and even diva Jennifer Hudson.

These duets albums have been done to death, but (at least according to Rolling Stone) this one is far more inspired than the rest.

I’m tempted to buy it, but I realize that it’s a little odd for me to buy a tribute album by an artist who I don’t have in my music collection to begin with. I’d rather go back to the Creedence Clearwate Revival songs that served as the source material before jumping ahead in line.

Because, like The Dude, I love me some Creedence. Somehow I have escaped owning any of their albums, but the number of excellent songs Fogerty and company delivered over a 5-year period in the late 60s and early 70s is mind-blowing.

So before I spring for Wrote a Song For Everyone, I’m going to reach back to Green River or Cosmo’s Factory and earn the right.

Someone told me long ago
There’s a calm before the storm,
I know; it’s been comin’ for some time.
When it’s over, so they say,
It’ll rain a sunny day,
I know; shinin’ down like water.

[Chorus:]
I want to know, have you ever seen the rain?
I want to know, have you ever seen the rain
Comin’ down on a sunny day?

Yesterday, and days before,
Sun is cold and rain is hard,
I know; been that way for all my time.
‘Til forever, on it goes
Through the circle, fast and slow,
I know; it can’t stop, I wonder.

[Chorus:]

Earn the right…You are too funny!

I feel about John forgery like you seem to feel about Neil Young. I just don’t particularly care for his voice and so it keeps me from further exploring CCR or his solo work.

I like CCR but loathe this song. Maybe you have to be an old fart like me, but the overplay of this song can not was unbearable. I still am in full recoil mode.
How amazing that Dana and Amy can chime in from the jungles of Costa Rica!

    Oops, typos…sorry

I like this song, and don’t recall it being overplayed, probably because I wasn’t listening to the radio then?? Anyway, it is amazing that Amy and Dana can chime in from the jungles–probably while zip lining 🙂

Thanks for the warning about Fogerty’s new album. CCR’s albums are worth hearing. Everyone I know only seems to have the greatest hits collection. Yes, this song was and is overplayed, meaning it’s quality is taken for granted. I feel the same about every song on Zepplin IV and never listen to it anymore. I got several CCR albums on vinyl from garage sales, an old way to find “new” music. Yeah, “earn” the right to good music, gee, what a concept. I’ve discovered great music by putting in some effort and leaving luck to be my guide is more emotionally satisfying than clicking around on Youtube (but who can help themselves?) Going after Fogerty’s and Young’s singing? Oy! Maybe it’s me, though. Perhaps when I mature enough I’ll understand the boy band concept of quality singing.
