Haim (rhymes with “time”) are a trio of twenty-something sisters who hail from Los Angeles. They’ve been around since 2006 but it wasn’t until the end of 2012 that they released their debut album and begin to catch the attention of critics and audiences alike.
They have been compared to Fleetwood Mac, which I definitely hear in today’s SOTD (this song could have fit right on to Tango in the Night). This is the second new band I've seen draw comparisons to Fleetwood Mac in recent weeks — I guess that 70s folk pop sound is resurgent.
I also get a bit of a Wilson Phillips meets Kate Bush, or maybe Robyn, vibe from this song. It veers between cheeseball and avant garde, an interesting mix.
But no ones gonna turn me around
Just one more step, I could let go
Oh and in the middle, I hear the voices
And they’re calling for me now
But nothing’s gonna wake me now
Cause I’m a slave to the sad heaven
And they’re calling,
Don’t stop, no, I’ll never give up
And I’ll never look up, just hold your head up
And if it gets rough, it’s time to get rough
They keep saying:
Don’t stop, no one’s ever enough
I’ll never look up, never give up
And if it gets rough, it’s time to get rough
But now falling, falling, falling
Falling, falling, falling, falling
Falling, falling, falling, falling
I look up and down,
And I can feel the eyes, they’re watching us so closely oh
I’m trying not to make a sound
Cause I’ll be found out some high oh
So keep calling,
Don’t stop, no, I’ll never give up
And I’ll never look up, just hold your head up
And if it gets rough, it’s time to get rough
They keep saying:
Don’t stop, no one’s ever enough
I’ll never look up, never give up
And if it gets rough, it’s time to get rough
Step into the fire feeling higher than the truth
(I’m falling)
I can feel the heat but I’m not burning
(but now I’m falling)
Feeling desire, feel the tired …
(I’m falling)
Feels like I’m falling, yeah
I can hear them calling
Step into the fire feeling higher than the truth
(I’m falling)
I can feel the heat but I’m not burning
(but now I’m falling)
Feeling desire, feel the tired …
(I’m falling)
Feels like I’m falling, yeah
I can hear them calling
(now I’m falling)
falling, falling, falling
Falling, falling, falling, falling
Falling, falling, falling, falling
Oh and now I’m falling
falling, falling, falling
Falling, falling, falling, falling
Falling, falling, falling, falling
Oh and now I’m falling
Falling, falling, falling, falling
Fall yeah
Falling, falling, falling, falling
Fall yeah
Into the fire feeling higher than the truth
(I’m falling)
I can feel the heat but I’m not burning
(but now I’m falling)
Feeling desire, feel the tired …
(I’m falling)
Feels like I’m falling, yeah
I can hear them calling for me
(now I’m falling)
Into the fire feeling higher than the truth
(I’m falling)
I can feel the heat but I’m not burning
(but now I’m falling)
Feeling desire, feel the tired …
(I’m falling)
It Feels like I’m falling, yeah
I can hear them calling for me
(now I’m falling)
never look up, never give up
never look up, never give up
never look up, never give up
I’ll never give up
I’ll never give up
Good pickup as to who they sound like. I definitely hear this as a cross between a more edgy Wilson Phillips and a less edgy Kate Bush. The chorus is a bit too poppy for my taste, but there are good things happening here that would make me curious to hear more.
