Song of the Day #1,725: ‘No Cars Go’ – Arcade Fire

neon_bibleThis might not be a popular decision around these parts, but I was intrigued enough by my three-week exploration of Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs that I’ve decided to continue the experiment.

Over the next three weeks I will dissect each song on Arcade Fire’s 2007 album Neon Bible, starting with the first single, ‘No Cars Go.’

OK… before you slit your wrists, check the date.

The funny thing is, I planned to write this post even before I realized it would fall oh so appropriately on April Fool’s Day. But what a perfect coincidence.

We know a place where no planes go
We know a place where no ships go

(Hey!) No cars go
(Hey!) No cars go
Where we know

We know a place no space ships go
We know a place where no subs go

(Hey!) No cars go
(Hey!) No cars go
Where we know

(Hey!)
(Hey!)
(Cars go!)

(Hey!) Us kids know
(Hey!) No cars go
Where we know

Between the click of the light and the start of the dream
Between the click of the light and the start of the dream
Between the click of the light and the start of the dream
Between the click of the light and the start of the dream

I don’t want any pushing, and I don’t want any shoving.
We’re gonna do this in an orderly manner.
Women and children!
Women and children!
Women and children, let’s go!
Old folks, let’s go!
Babies needing cribs, let’s go!

Lol! You actually had me fooled (and groaning) when I pulled this post up. Congratulations.

Meanwhile, the irony is that I am actually loving this song. Maybe it was just the more U2 sounding Suburbs album I didn’t like. This one reminds me more of Joe Jackson’s Blaze of Glory album. Really digging it. Wow, maybe exploring the rest of arcade fire’s catalog would actually change my opinion about this band and help me understand why the critics adore them.

Oh, April Fool’s Day! This song is crap like the rest of them😄

Some pranks are just not funny. Meanwhile, I would like to lobby for another fun theme week – great songs featured in films or tv shows; cool covers by known artists; funny songs (in honor of the date)? I don’t know… just please no more Arcade Fire. Or Ron Sexsmith. Or Bob Dylan. 🙂 (though I guess I should shut up and just start my own blog… 😉
