Song of the Day #1,478: ‘Dream Another Dream’ – Nuclear Valdez

A tiny portion of my music collection — maybe half of one percent, tops — belongs to my wife.

She and I both enjoy a lot of the other music I own, but those are all albums I purchased. I can probably count on one hand the physical CDs she has purchased herself.

One of those is Dream Another Dream by Nuclear Valdez, the title track of which is today’s random selection.

Nuclear Valdez is (was?) a Miami-based rock band that released two albums in the late 80s and early 90s, both of which I own (but have never listened to). They released a third album in 2000 but haven’t done anything since. Whether they broke up or are just on a really long hiatus, I don’t know (and neither does Wikipedia).

I found a FB page for them (not sure if it’s a fan page or run by a band member) – https://www.facebook.com/pages/Nuclear-Valdez/126080607404763. It was started in May of 2010 and is filled with photos of the band in the last 80’s. Cool to think of how a band like that is part of the collective local memory, though it might never have made any impression outside those local boundaries.

I wonder if Alex would have bought more CDs over the years if you didn’t beat her to the punch.

I hear a little bit of a Santana sound in this track. Not bad, especially like the trumpet at the end. Always a sucker for that!

I really like this beat and sound a lot! This would be a great driving song. Love the trumpet too!

Nuclear Valdez is my favorite band of all time! I am friends on facebook with each member of the band so i shall inquire as to their status. Last I heard, they haven’t all lived locally for some time. I last saw them at a reunion show they had at Churchill’s Pub approximately 4 years ago. I was practically on stage with them, being so close and excited…almost like a crazy, screaming, crying girl fan at a Beatles concert. Years ago, “the Nukes” filmed their video, Summer, at the aforementioned club. I believe, for a millisecond, one can see the back of my head as I was dancing up a storm while they were performing on stage. My favorite song by them, btw, is “The Boy Within” which, unfortunately, never made it onto any of their cd’s. Their manager, at the time, John Tovar, made me a special, very long tape of their music which includes the song. A couple years ago, when i gave away my entire album and cassette collection to an ex student, I held on to 2 cassettes only: one of my parents speaking to me in Russian when I was a little girl asking me what sounds different animals make along with my responses and my personalized Nuclear Valdez tape!
