Song of the Day #1,135: ‘Time Warp’ – Brad Paisley

Brad Paisley’s sixth album, 2008’s Play, is a predominantly instrumental record. Eleven of its 16 tracks are music-only, showcasing the guitar chops that were overshadowed on his early records.

In an NPR interview recorded after the release of Mud On the Tires, Paisley lamented that he wasn’t known as a guitar player first and a country music singer second. The instrument is his first love and his playing is the aspect of his music in which he takes the most pride. To this day, his dream is to share a stage with Eric Clapton.

In that interview, Paisley announced his intention to one day record an instrumental album, and presumably the success of Mud On the Tires and its two smash follow-ups gave him the clout to do just that.

I confess that Play is the only Paisley album I don’t (yet) own. I’m not a big fan of instrumental music, whether it’s jazz, country, rock, classical, you name it. I enjoy nice music in the background, but when it comes to the kind of active listening that occupies most of my time, I need vocals.

Because I’m unfamiliar with the tracks on Play, today I’m featuring instead an instrumental track from Time Well Wasted. ‘Time Warp’ is a fast-paced tour of several musical styles, showcasing Paisley’s jazz and rock influences as well as his country roots. There’s even a quick burst of the Charlie Brown theme in the mix.

I’m confused. Why not pull one of the instrumentals off Play, even if you don’t own it?

Anyway, very good instrumental but I, like you, likes me some vocals to go with my musical jams.

That would mean looking up the tracks, seeking them out on YouTube, finding one I like… who has that kind of time? 🙂
