The Script is one of those bands whose songs are the equivalent of movies with legs. Their singles don’t race up the charts, they crawl. They slowly work their way into the back of your mind until you know you’ve heard them somewhere before but you’re just not quite sure where or when.
That’s how ‘For the First Time,’ which was released at the end of the summer of 2010, is showing up as one of the big hits of the summer of 2011. It took that long to make a splash.
I don’t think it’s a particularly good song (certainly not as good as their biggest hit, ‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’) but it’s pleasant enough. It reminds me of the alterna-pop that was big in the 90s.
Incidentally, the young woman in this video is Bono’s daughter, an Irishwoman in America playing an Irishwoman in America.
While I’m drinking jack all alone in my local bar
And we don’t know how
How we got into this mad situation
Only doing things out of frustration
Tryna make it work but man these times are hard
She needs me now but I can’t seem to find the time
I got a new job now in the unemployment line
And we don’t know how
How we got into this mess is it God’s test?
Someone help us cause we’re doing our best
Tryna make it work but man these times are hard
But we’re gunna start by
Drinking old cheap bottles of wine
Sit talking up all night
Saying things we haven’t for a while, a while yeah
Smiling but we’re close to tears
Even after all these years
We just now, got the feeling, that we’re meeting
For the first time
She’s in line at the door with her head held high
While I just lost my job, but didn’t lose my pride
And we both know how
How we’re gonna make it work when it hurts
When you pick yourself up you get kicked to the dirt
Tryna make it work but man these times are hard
But we’re gunna start by
Drinking old cheap bottles of wine
Sit talking up all night
Doing things we haven’t for a while, a while yeah
Smiling but we’re close to tears
Even after all these years
We just now, got the feeling, that we’re meeting
For the first time
But we’re gunna start by
Drinking old cheap bottles of wine
Sit talking up all night
Saying things we haven’t for a while
We’re smiling but we’re close to tears
Even after all these years
We just now, got the feeling, that we’re meeting
For the first time
Yeah for the first time
Oh for the first time
Yeah for the first time
(We just now got the feeling that we’re meeting, for the first time)
Oh these times are hard
Yeah they’re making us crazy
Don’t give up on me baby
Wow, Bono’s OLD! 😉
This isn’t the song I was thinking you were going to elect from The Script, but now I’m blanking on the one we’ve been hearing on the radio this summer.
I love the sound of this band, so I find myself enjoying all of their songs. Still, I don’t associate this one with summer of 2011.
Also, do you think that “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved” (which is the song we’ve been hearing this summer) is a bigger hit than “Breakeven”?
‘Breakeven’ is the bigger hit (by far if you look at the Billboard charts).
‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’ was released three years ago. If it’s on the radio this summer that might be because Xenia sang it on The Voice.
Ah – that explains it. Speaking of… we’re waiting to see if another of the songs she covered will make an appearance this week, as it keeps popping up on our radio, and is definitely one of our songs of summer 2011.
I think we’ve been hearing today’s song an awful lot this summer, more so than “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved.”
I like the Scripts sound generally and this song is no exception. They play in that relatively sweet spot of easy listening alt pop much in the way One Republic does.
Amy, I assume you’re talking about ‘Price Tag’? That’s the only other song she sang apart from the Script ones. Sorry, that will not be appearing this week. I actually didn’t know it was a recent song… Xenia’s performance was the first and only time I’ve ever heard it.
“Price Tag” seems to be a big hit. We have been hearing it all the time. It’s a very infectious song.
